98 vt commodore cruise control wont engage but does have power.

hi,my 98 vt cruise control was fine one day but the next it wont engage the set/coast function .i've replaced the stalk and module under the bonnet but no change.the cruise power light will switch on but the set/coast light or function wont work.i've tried the test on the stalk by holding power on then starting the engine and testing set/coast and resume and the lights on the dash works this way but not when driving the car.
any ideas

Check that none of your brake light globes are blown, also check the brake switch which is under the dash above the brake pedal, sometimes they need some adjustment

you're spot on thanks for that ,i cant believe 2 brake light globes out did this after all the screwing around with cruise components

yep,and none of the wreckers i went to said try you're brake lights first.
