You could have a broken key (engine immobilizer chip) or a broken ignition barrel. When the key turns in the ignition does it feel like it moves for freely then what it used to. If you have no resistance for when you push it into the start position it is generally a broken key. Got another key laying around?

it could be the starter since it tried starting but just to make sure its not ya immobilizer get some contact cleaner on the ignition barrel contacts and the key.. get a big spanner and knock the starter solenoid which is the little cylinder attached to the stater.. give it 5 semi hard knocks and try that if nothing happens check the battery with a multi meter and the terminals on the starter is all is ok then its ya starter.

Thanks for the responses as the car park in a tight spot did have much time right now so i got to the starter motor and hit with my spanner , the car then cranked 3 times need 4 i think to start the car but just shut off , after the first try i get no crank after abit of waiting now and then can get it 1 or 2 cranks ova but never a long a crank to start the car. if it is that starter is it easy to reach to and replace for a diy homey

That could be another issue also as some times the key when inserted wouldn't turn had to remove key out and in to get it to turn . not sure why i cant lock the steering wheel also

Hmmm i would say mate that if its cranking the first time, but not cranking the next it seems that it's time for a new starter motor. You'll would have noticed by now if it was a broken ignition barrel. How ever the immobilizer may still be on the cards

mine decided it would fire once then stop. Then nothing. Remove key. nothing. Get out, lock car. Get back in try again, same story.
It was the body control module refusing to recognise the key. $500 later plus 2 new keys at $75 each and it goes again. Bloody technology. Bloody holden. Bloody, bloody. Not happy, Jan.
    cheers

ps. if this was the only trouble this complete heap of shit had given me I would just say "oh well" but this is about the last straw. 2 x dfi modules. 3 x coils, 1 x coil, 1 x diff, 2 x cracked heads, body control module, coil spring (air bag light on), complete front end bushes, plus normal consumables = tyres, batteries, brakes, headlight globes, every other conceivable globe, etc, etc.

hi guys, my vt is doing something similar. it was giving me a bit of grief turning the key over the last few weeks, put key in, wont turn, pull out put back in and it would turn eventually. central locking playing up ( a good tap on the key and it would work) so when i jumped into it yesterday and turned the key and nothing happened (complete lack of resistance in the ingnition, it felt very loose) i assumed key.....took it to mr minit to text the battery in the key and he said the key appears fine......should i now be looking into the ignition barrel? or will holden be able to tell me more about the key?

any advice would be great as i have to fix it myself....

    cheers
    Nikki
