    Default ticking noise in L67....

Hi guys, just wanna run some symptoms by you and see if any of you have experienced the same thing.

I just upgraded my pulley to a 10psi, pressed on, new belt on, but now when you turn the car on and upon throttle, for the first couple minutes there is a constant ticking sound that is coming from under the hood. can't tell you exactly where it's coming from, but it's loud enough to be noticed from inside the car. Ticks faster as you accelerate harder.....but after a few minutes, it stops the tick. I thought it may be tappets but thats normally caused by low engine oil. Checked that but there's plenty of oil.....mate thinks maybe it's the blower screws hitting each other and i might need to change the gears behind the snout, but i didn't have this problem before the pulley upgrade....

    ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREAT!

    cheers in advance.

sounds like a lifter isnt holding pressure, what oil are you running in it?? if its anything over 15w40 its probably getting a bit thick, also there could be a fair bit of carbon build up in the valley and maybe a bits dropped off and blocked the lifter.

Bearings in the pulleys will make4 a ticking sound when they are especially noticable on startup and it will fade on warm up, also you may have damaged a snout bearing when you put the pulley on or it has shit itself from spinning it faster ,

did you change the rockers and pushrods?? does sound like a lazy lifter tho... cos once the oil warms up it thins out and can get into the lifter easier.

usually if a bearings gone you can put a screwdriver on the pulley nut or snout housing and put the handle next to your ear and use that as a stethoscope while the engines running

you'd think if it was a bearing i would have heard it before the upgrades....yes i have changed rockers only, not pushrods....mace said they'd be fine with standard ones.

sorry i'm new to this, but what exactly do you mean by 'lifter'?

Do you have headers? It is common for people to notice increased valve noise after fitting rockers. The valves are opening and closing faster and travelling further so that can cause the noise which can be amplified by thin walled headers

BIG-EV: don't think we pressed the pulley on too far, met it flush with the end of the snout....thanks for the idea
VT S: correct, only when cold starting, hardly noticeable when engine is started when warm
Peanuts Inc.: Thanks for that, i'll head there and have a look =)
CHARGEDVX6: no I don't have headers, but wouldn't the valve noise be experienced all the time if i don't have headers, not just when cold starting?

    Thanks for your help everyone

if the valve is a bit noisy upon startup until engine is warm and oil passes through to lubricate it, is there anything that can be done to stop the noise? is it going to cause harm to the engine? and would changing the valve springs change anything?

Firstly i would take the rocker covers of and loosen all the rockers and adjust them again.

if i were you i would be adding a lifter flush additive, runnin it for half an hour till the oil gets hot, drain the oil, change the filter and try running a semi synthetic 15w40 oil...
did you have a look at how the lifter works?? it also supplies the oil to the rocker arm thru the pushrod and can do damage if it is run dry for minutes at a time
