    Smile X in trip computor

Can anyone help me get rid of an X in the left hand window of a VT calais. I have just gone thru a lot of ABS probs and replaced the module (Good price at Repco) not sure if it caused the problem with the X. Have reset the trip computer but not gone into the fault codes yet. Any ideas thanks.

Does it appear in all modes or just one?

I am getting it in the left trip screen and in the bottom-right of the climate control screen, but only when all the lights light up for the (supposed) ABS fault.

an X in the bottom left trip computer screen (bottom right corner) means there is a problem with one of your climate control sensors. Disconnect your battery and the X will dissappear, and if its a persistant fault, will reappear once you put your car into IGN or start it.

Thanks guys it has gone out but the new module didnot fully fix the ABS probs start up engine and goes thru diags then all lights off until the car moves then ABS and TRAC OFF lights come on and stay until next startup. Checked Tract switch ok and wheel sensors but a pinout for the ABS module would be great to prove wiring.

That can usually be a loose or bad connection at the module. Also, tighten your battery terminals.

unless you have specialised measuring equipment, checking the signal from the wheel speed sensors is near impossible. You need an oscilloscope to graph the wave patterns. As these are self-powered sensors, the most the average bloke can check for is power and a good earth at the ABS module with a multimeter.

What symptoms apart from the fault light does the car present?
At a longshot it could be a sensor problem, as the system will expect to see a good reading from all wheels when the car moves - (the computer compares each sensor to the other wheels, and when it sees one wheel with no signal it considers this wheel locked by the brakes...the problem is that the brake pedal switch isn't pressed, so it goes into fault mode).

Try checking all 4 wheel speed sensors for correct gap (approx 1 mm) between the tip and the tone wheel that it reads.

Check that all the tone wheels are clean and nothing is blocking the holes (these are magnetic and sometimes dust, metal filings and anything else ferrous will cling to it)

Check all the wiring plugs are tight and each connecting wire isn't damaged or broken where it goes through the strut tower into the body. Sometimes road debris can damage this.

Failing this, you'll need to get your hands on a tech2 or equivalent scan tool and read the live data from the ABS system when the car is rolling to see what's going on.

Don't waste money on guess-repairs. Too many people out there have a second ECU/module/sensor/*insert part* that has nothing wrong with it, but was repleaced through frustration. Unless it's a cheap trial part, sometimes spending a couple of bucks getting the right diagnosis is a good investment.

See how you go and keep me posted

Thanks Moose I have an osciliscope but my wiring diagram does not show ABS connector pin numbers so I cannot test wiring up to the connector. Have also tried a second ABS unit and does the same so are sure it is a sensor (wheel, speed ????). Or an earth. The rear sensors have arround 2mm gap and do not appear to have adjustment but my experance with this type of sensor means it should work.
The lights come on when reversing out the drive with brakes on, or when moving off from start up so brake switch could be on or off.
the tract on/off sw does not do anything when it has faulted, am about to try it at standstill, the Trac sw works on/off, with trac off, reversing with brakes off ABS light comes on within a few meters of straight reversing,
All wheel sensors test ok at the sensors and the main earth under the cruise unit was just loose but all is still the same.

Latest report bit the wallet and took it to the local dealer where he pluged in a Tech II unit only to come up with a NO COMMS TO ABS so no results.
I am now going to open the main connector looking for corrosion at the wire to pins joint .

Here are wiring colours for the Wheel Speed Sensors (WSS) at the module. Make sure you leave the connector plugged in to the module whan you do these tests. Back-probe the connector with paper clips and connect your oscilloscope probes to them. This avoids damaging the connector and pins.
Turn the wheel to enable graphing of the WSS wave patterns.
    LHF WSS - Blue/Red and Green/Yellow
RHF WSS - White and Red
LHR WSS - Voilet and Yellow
RHR WSS - Black and Blue

You could even try it a second time with the ignition on, turning one wheel at a time until the fault light comes on...or then again, maybe it won't. If the ABS can't compare the sensor to another wheel, it can't fault the sensor. Maybe do this in wheel pairs (both front, both rear, both right hand, then both left hand) to eliminate the good sensors.

See how you go and post results up.

    EDIT:
crap, just realised there are 3 red wires to the module.
Ok, Two of these wires will have battery voltage with igntion on, whereas WSS have no voltage when not moving.

Have checked the sensors with ohm meter and all ok may use scope later also maped out rest of wires and all are connected including the one to the diag connector so at this time beer oclock I will give it a rest and in the morning change back to the spare unit for another comparison. Try disconnecting the battery earth for a few mins and reconnect it, you may have to reset the stereo code. Otherwise check wiring to all sensors including outside temp if u have it

IT WORKS at last. Many thanks to kopper69 and the ABS fault codes. Also moose man.
1st replacement unit had code 45 &46 LHF inlet & outlet solenoid fail.
2nd unit also showed code 46 but when cleared all works, great to have country roads with dirt edges to check ABS & TRAC Control.
Thanks to all and enjoy motoring.
