Hi guys, just wondering if it is difficult to change the brakes front and rear. I gotta a quote for $768 rotors, pads and fitting which at the moment is expensive for me especially coming up to Xmas. I want to save myself a bit of money and learn to do the job myself.
Is this hard to do and what tools will be needed? Is there a procedure for this? Any suggestions on what brands to go for and also standard vented or vented drilled rotors? I have gone for cheap brands or whatever they put on and they don't seem to last long.
Cheers.
How to: Change pads and rotors.
changing rear brake pads
should just about cover it :P
Can be a difficult job especially those rear rotors because of the handbrake. The bolts on the calipers are super tight so you will need decent tools to remove it as they are covered in locktight. $768.00 doesn't sound to unreasonable for 4 rotors and pads + fitting.
Repco have 2 x discs, pads and brake fluid for $99, front or rear for all commodore models. In the latest catalogue.
Ok quality too.
What are you using the car for? Is it just a street car?
Our recommendation for entry level brakes is QFM HPX pads (made on the Gold Coast, Bendix Ultimate equivalent, but very low dust and rotor wear), and RDA standard rotors.
For front and rear HPX and RDA rotors for the VX you're looking at $328, plus about $15 shipping to you.
Otherwise for cheap cheap, the $99 Repco deal is unbeatable. But if you're going to to do the work yourself you may as well start with decent parts...

Sick of paying too much for high performance brake pads? Want high performance and cold bite with low rotor wear?

Cheers guys for that info. Will be attemping it tomorrow. GSLRALLYSPORT thanks for the reply but I guess I should of posted earlier to buy them off you. Repco deal is unbelieveable value but will still be putting cheap crap parts as brakes. Think i'll get the RDA rotor's from super cheap or somewhere.
The thing is I had brakes done in Feb this year, new brake fluid, front pads + rotors and rears rotors skimmed. I do alot of driving and yes this a daliy driven car so cheap stuff just aint gonna cut it.
Just a question, do I need to flush the system again when applying new pads and rotors? Is there different sizes between the front and rear rotors?
If you had your rotors done this year are you sure they need replacing?
No you dont have to flush the system
Yes they are different size, the fronts will be ventilated while the rears are solid.
Thanks bud. Yeah they need doing, front rotors have blue lines and has hot spots. The rears squeak when braking. Im also experiencing vibration when I guess is from the fronts.
Anyway I now have DBA slotted front rotors with Bendix pads and the rear DBA solid rotors with Bendix pads. Hopefully the extra expence will pay off and last longer then those cheap-o brands.
I did rotors and pads on a VT and it cost me under $200,thats with new caliper bolts.
Are we there yet?
You should maybe ring round some brake shops to find out how much it would be for them to just machine them as im sure theyd have plently left on them.
Would probably save you money on just buying new rotors.
Did all the brake on the weekend. Brakes really well now and no vibrations at all. I followed the bedding in process but I am experiencing a squeek from the rear brakes when applying brakes, fronts are quiet as a mouse. What can I do to stop that noise? Does it take longer for the rears to bed in as the fronts do most of the work?
Oh total cost of all pads and rotors front and rear came to just under $450. Not bad I guess plus I learnt how to do it and saved money getting someone to fit them ;-)
Did you put brake quiet on there?
If you did could be the compund of the pad.
Reverse doing about 50km/h and brake hard, repeat 4-5 times... Or untill you can smell the pads.
This should get rid of the squeak.
PS. Try this somewhere secluded haha.
