    Default Front end clunk

I have a front end clunk when I go over the bumps in car parks and the bottom of driveways. I have been to Ultratune and they have diagnosed and fixed Swaybar link brushes, Power Steering rack boot, Front absorbers. all have been fixed but the clunk is still there. And after the shocks now the car makes a rubber stressing sound when I turn the wheel. (sounds like the Grudge, if you have seen the movie. PLEASE HELP, 1999 VT.

You will prob find it the top strut mounts they are rubber and compress over time if you had the front struts replaced. They should of replaced the top mounts and bearing plate at the same time..

Here is a pic of mine top mount incl the bearing you can see in the pic that the centre bit and broken away from the mount

Thanks Boganv8. Thanks for the photo. I am not a mechanic so I will copy the the work receipt for the shocks here someone might be able to work out what was done. It is most likley just a cut and paste work detail.

Remove strut assemblies and examine. Dismantle struts as necessary to extract old shock absorber inserts. Renew inserts. replace oil as necessary. examine spring condition. reassemble struts and fit to vehicle. road test. Labour x2 Front shocks KYB x1 $350.

From the look of what you wrote it real funny as the shock inserts are not replaceable you have to replace the whole strut.... Got no idea what they mean bout the oil????????

If they inspected the top rubber mount and you cant get your finger in between the ridge. Then they need replacing and the bearing also cause if its shagged then it will fall apart as you dis assemble the strut...

I have no idea what they did, all I know for sure is that after they did it the car started making a rubber stressing sound, I took the car car back and 1, they could not hear it, 2, they heard it and said it was normal as the parts had to ware in. They must have done something because there was no sound before they touched the car.

Yep sounds exactly like the prob i have but mainly on the drivers side, cant notice it as much on passenger side. In the last 12 months i have had front struts, front strut mounts, sway bar link bushes, castor bushes and steering rack all replaced and only since i have had the steering rack replaced (mainly due to leaking) have i had this clunking sound at the front of my VX series 1 going over bumps both on the road and in carparks also when driving in and out of driveways. Its driving me mad. My mechanic cant pick it, mate who is a mechanic cant pick it, had the car to Pedders, they said strut mounts, nope that didnt fix it, theres not much left under there to replace. PLEASE if ANYONE knows what the cause of this clunking sound is let me know, cheers!!!

I just read through your op and all the other posts and nobody as far as I see has mentioned radius rod bushes and the body support brackets. Something to look at? Engine mounts were mentioned but did you check them? They make a loud clunk if they are shot. BoganV8, some struts can have the inserts replaced and people do it as it is cheaper than replacing the whole strut. I am not sure about VTs but you can easily check by looking for a hex screw-in fitting inside your strut spring at the top of the shock absorber section. Some have a knurled fitting. If it is there then you can fit inserts.

even though its not the same model my vr had the same problem and i have been over everthing like you have...My car used to have king springs and it had a funny noise that ended up being the top progressive coils of the springs touching each other on light bumps and the noise transmitting into the cabin.I put some spirap binding around the top section of each spring (recommended by kings themselves)and the noise dissappearred..
