hay all not sure if this has been covered but i want to know about each type of fuel (from which servo) out there and whats best for my car (VT calias 1999)?? and also i would like peoples apion as well
Everyone is going to give you a different answer of things they have "heard" from their best mates dad's brother's stepdaughters boyfriends sister's aunty's next door neighbour about different servo's fuels.
Just use Mobil, Shell or BP and you'll be fine.

Caltex Vortex is my favorite too, but I'll use BP, Shell and Mobil also. In the end who makes it depends on where you live, there's only a couple of refineries in each state so it depends where you live as to what fuel will be the best. Also mostly if you just get it from the newest station it will be the best you can do
im a vortex user in the vt but also use bp on occasion but the rest it just runs like crap.
My vb however pings on anything but shell go figure.
i try not to touch shell. i remember having a traffic light grand prix with a friend who had a skyline R32 gts-t with mods, and i was in my R31 RB30 non-turbo manual which was stock apart from extractors, and i obviously was expecting him to disappear because it generally had no trouble leaving stock ls1's behind, but it was pretty close... and i said to him... whats wrong with your car?... and it was just crap fuel that made it sluggish and not run properly (shell v-power 98) and it was fine again once he put mobil back in.
its less about brand and more about the actual petrol station... in particular the fuel they are selling you.
i try and avoid and older looking petrol stations... old stations, old pumps, old underground tanks, old everything else.
newer stations... well, everything is newer. also, the busier/bigger the station is, the more fuel they are getting delivered on a regular basis, so the fuel has a chance of being fresher.
that being said, I used to swear by Shell Optimax.... until I got a few bad batches of fuel. Never had an issue with BP Ultimate, so I try and fill there when I can.
Always Caltex Vortex, wouldn't use anything else. Shell is crap, dirty. I've mentioned on this forum before about the guy that works for Gilbarco, servicing/repairing bowsers. I repeat Shell is dirty crap.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
I have used 'em all, from old run down country stations to the new fangled ones, 91, 95 e10, 96, 98 octane, whatever,(generally go for the cheapest) during my 124,000K's. The V6 Commy has done close on 200,000 trouble free kilometers, and I must say, I haven't really noticed anything different in performance between brands, grades or suppliers and I am on my 3rd set of NGK stocky plugs as well!
As for dirty fuel, that is what your fuel filter is for!
i stick to mobil 95. have heard caltex is good, but i used their 95 in my current tank, and noticed my fuel usage increase a bit, and probably a bit more sluggish too, so i dont know if ill bother with it again. used mobil 98 in my supercharged v6 and never had issues with it
1995 Manual HSV Clubsport
Wade Cam :: 9.2:1 CR :: Pacemaker headers :: Twin 2.5" Exhaust :: VT Brakes
1991 Supercharged VN Berlina
9 PSI SC14 Intercooled :: Genie headers :: Twin cats :: HM Twin 2.25 exhaust :: 3.45:1 LSD
i am a converted mobil user. it runs the best for both petrol and gas. i used mobil 98 but only because my fuel is in the tank for a long time (don't use it often) and apparently higher octane fuels stay good for longer. it was cheap today ($1.30/l for 98) almost not even worth running it on gas which was 60c/l

mate just use BP Ultimate or Caltex Vortex i havnt had a problem with them yet iv got a vr ss commodore with 400hp at the treds and i dont normaly run pump fuel in it but it ran alright on BP Ultimate but i had to but sonme octane booster but that was just to stop the pinging cos of the high comp
I have found that bp 98 is best for my gen 111
ok well around me the woolworths (caltex i think) petrol station seem to be the bussiest soo fresher fuel so to speak so. now i have run a few tanks of e10 through my car being a bit short of cash now when i put my foot down it seems to i duuno what you call it but it doesnt accerlate for a couple of seconds then it just picks up heaps. any surrgestions?
Use real fuel.
E10 will kill you fuel pump in a matter of weeks.. plus it actually costs you more in the long run as you get less kms than normal petrol (To the point where you actually get less kms per 1$ than using regular unleaded)
Good laughs in this thread
E10 has less energy per molecule, so you need to burn more of it to create the same amount of power in your engine. In real world situations this translates into a car that feels more sluggish, and increased fuel consumption as you find yourself using more throttle to achieve the same acceleration.
It's marginally cheaper, but you should do the maths (using real figures from your car) to find out if it's actually saving you money, and if the reduced performance is worth that money. For most people it's not.
