Do you mean it slips out of reverse and back into neutral?

If so it could be any of a number of internal components, and you'd probably be up for a gearbox rebuild, which will range anywhere from about $1000 to $1500 depending on if you just get the suspect part replaced, or if you get all the bearings/syncros/seals done at the same time.

Most people get the lot done, because more than half of that cost will be labour just for stripping the box down and putting it back together again, so for an extra couple hundred bucks you'll get the whole lot done and save you potentially paying over odds if it turns out you need more work done down the track.

Crap, i cant find the link now . there is a page with commodore commodore faults...

Good news... i think i know what it is, and its not very expensive.

The T56 had issues where the cir-clips on the gear selector would fall off, resulting in it jumping out of gear (typically only seen in reverse). The part itself will be like 50 cents, not sure on labour. Based on the fact you dont need to remove the gearbox from the car.. i would expect it to be a ~$100 job.

I think ive got the link book marked at home. Will update the post tonight.

Mine isn't damaged, but any hints about cheap repairs instead of a full rebuild are good advice
