Checking Fault Codes

I want to check the fault codes on my VX. I have a list of codes and the details of how to do it but the book doesn't mention how to jump the two pins. Can you just use a piece of speaker wire or something? and if so is there any problems with doing it this way?
Any other advice would be great.

I just use a paperclip bent into a U shape.
