    Default Reseting ODO

    Hi all,
Looking to purchase a new (used) instrument cluster due to defective old one. I have found one on ebay with over 230000kms on it and am wondering how much it would cost (roughly, i know it varies) for holden to change it back to my kms?

I'm not 100% sure on this but I think once they hit 100 000klms it can't be changed

but you can have it done by a professional to match the kms already on the vehicle? (correct me if im wrong)

but if you had a defective one with 123456 on it, and bought one with 350350 on it, why cant you have it set (by holden or someone similar) back to 123456????

doesnt sound illegal to me, if you set it to have LESS than what was already on it, then i see legalities.

One the cluster has done more than 100kms (Not 100,000... just 100km) it cant be changed. You'll need to find one with the same number of Kms or purchase new. (you can get the 3 window clusters for about $500 new...)

If your cluster stops working you can get a JP (justice of the peace) to sign a statutory declaration stating the reason it was changed was because of malfuction, and it's all legit.

All clusters mechanical and or electronic can have their KM travelled adjusted to match your broken one.
It has no relevance how many km's are showing on the replacement cluster.

Yes it is illegal to wind them back in hope of a "sale", and that applies in any state, but when did that ever stop anyone... A car can have a zillion km's on it, it's how it drives and performs is what people should look at not the fancy km's it has on it.

    hope that helps

what if my car had done 183,000 then I get a new crate motor installed? what happens to the ODO then? Should it be reset back to 0km's coz it's been fully rebuilt or what?

ODO is for the chassis not the engine. Having said that - many people chage it to zero when a new motor goes in. On a 20year old car - probably means nothing.

There are so many people buying clusters with lower klms on them then what they have now and installing them on their cars. It's not hard to do and when I look at cars if there aren't any service books with it then I don't believe the Klms on the car.

I once looked at a car with 40,000 klms on it and it looked like it had done 400,000klms. It was really rough in all areas from the inside, the body, under the bonnet and underneath the car and yet the guy swore it was the true mileage but didn't have books for it so I walked away from it.

Are you 100% sure on that? Every single person ive ever spoken to how knows how to reporgram them have all said the exact same thing... they cant be changed after 100kms.

BTW, does anybody know where to get a cluster reprogramed in melbourne? Ive tried PM'ing DRBOB but he hasnt been online in over a month now... i want to install my senator cluster already :@

From all information I have gathered on this subject , and I am assuming you are talking about an LCD electronic trip meter, there shouldn't be any problem for a professional / someone with the knowledge, to change the new cluster to match the busted one.

In regards to crate motors, it has absolutely nothing to do with the motor. If you rebuild your motor it would technically have "zero" km's travelled but the chassis you are inserting the motor into is where the km's travelled matter.

With the availability large number of e.b.a.y etc etc people selling their wrecked cars, and these parts are too easy to fit, if you were to base the reason you bought the car on KM's showing on cluster without considering all the other parts, then you are simply setting yourself up for a fall.

Any commodore if serviced regurlarly and all maintenance items done, can go well into 400,000 km without any hassles, however if you intend to be a lead foot with this same car then something is more likely to go "bang", than a new motor and trans conbo.

    hope this helps

Yes, but once it gets over 100km it gets locked... where even a TechII cant change them. I've heard this from many many people...

I hope you are right, as it means second hand clusters can be reused, as opposed to waiting to find one with the same number of kms or buying one brand new.

I've been told if the cluster has a white backing then it can be changed at any time. I PM'd Dr Bob about it and he said it can be done, but Holden will not do it.

thats right the white backing clusters r usually from the VT range tho ive found so VX's r a lil different as they use a different chipset. Speak 2 Greg (Pheddy) he'll give u the yay or nay on VX clusters as he has a tech 2 and the programs 2 do most things.

Would there be a way to hack it with a tech2 or something so that if i put a new engine in my car it will display the current kms (i.e what the car has done) and then also a new km meter that can be for the engine?
