Ok guys, so my 99' Series 1 Vt Berlina is having a common-ish problem
Every now and then when I drive most of the dash warning lights come on and stay on for a prolonged period of time. The Abs light, check engine, oil lights etc.
Anyway, from a previous thread on this forum I read that this was the ABS Module playing up and you would most likely need to replace it - I spoke to my mechanic and he said that this could get very pricey.
What I'm wondering is, is this a straight forward job that I could do myself if I had the parts?
Could I find the part at a wrecker? How much would it cost? How do I tell the condition? Where in the car is the bloody thing... Etc...
I'm a complete novice so any help is great. Any quotes on prices for repairing a ABS module as well? Including labour
You'd be looking at around $300 for a new Bosch ABS electronic module which is the part to replace in your car. And around an hour labour to do it.
Hard to do ?

Don't ask from Holden...why else would they call it the Lion's Den for?
Get one from Coventrys. Just about any place will sell genuine parts to you cheaper than Holden itself.
An hour is about as long as it'll take if you're a novice at replacing the electronic module. And no its not hard to do. You will need the right tools like torx bits.
Thanks for the help guys
all you have to replace is the black box on the end of the module (towards the front of the vehicle) all you need to do is remove the wiring plug, undo the bolts holding the abs module assembly down and lift it up (slightly bending the abs brake lines) then its a couple of torx bolts that hold the abs module on. remove the module and replace with new unit. takes about half to 3/4 of an hour.
a new unit shouldnt cost anymore then $200-$300 or so. other wise your paying way to much!

Does anyone know for a fact any places that sell these units at around $300. I asked at Bursons today and just for the electronic part, with traction control, from a brand I've never heard of, it was $700-odd dollars.

i replaced the electronic half only a few months ago and the part only cost $280-$320...not sure how much exactly but i would've never bought it if it were $700! thats to damn expensive!
i bought the part from auto pro
Like I said before, I got mine from Coventrys for about $300, new genuine Bosch electronic unit, took me about 45 mins to change out being the first one I have every done. I suppose if Holden is your only shop in the area, you'd have no other options of getting a new one other than maybe knowing the mechanic and making sure they're not ripping you off.
I just rung Coventry at Albany, $653 for a new one, and $476 for reco and $200 deposit. Bursons want $700-odd dollars for some brand I've never heard of. AIE at Underwood that stock Injectronics Automotive Electronics reco units are $297 for the reco. $700 odd from Holden.
EDIT: Just rung Coventry at Osbourne Park and they want $476 as well, but with a $300 deposit, and thats reco. Am I calling the wrong people here?

My VT 3.8 V6 has the engine warning light only coming on after about 3-4 minutes. If I turn the engine off and on the light is off only to come back on after 3 again. It started happening after I bottomed out on a dirt road at about 60km/h.
Not sure if it could be just a loose wire, ABS module or coolant temp sensor. Would disconnecting and reconnecting the battery solve the problem, or will I need to pay for a Diagnostic test.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
most likely you've damaged something thats causing the warning light to come on. Check the fault code otherwise take it in to a mechanic to have a look.
I got some advise from a company called AFI in Brisbane Afi Australia and was told to check the O2 sensors which are located on the exaust pipes. After doing so and making sure that they were both intact restarted the car and the light has not come back on. Hopefully problem solved. Thanks for the help.
I was told by a local Gibbos employee to contact a company AFI in Brisbane who told me to check the O2 sensors, which I did. Found that they were both intact, but in moving them around must have had a loose wire because the problem seems to have restified itself.
Hope this helps someone else.
I had the same exact problem...bottomed out the car over a mates crappy driveway and had the engine warning light come on. It only came on after a few minutes driving as well. I noticed that I was getting crap fuel economy and could smell petrol out of the exhaust. A mate has the same car so we swapped over the O2 sensors and viola problem solved.
I was told that when the 02 sensor fails you can have the computer read falsely and end up pumping heaps more fuel through the system as it thinks you are running too lean.
Anyway that will only fix the problem with the engine warning light not the others IMO.
Every now and then ...especially on rainy days I get the same thing with the ABS light...the ABS is functioning however as I have tested that its just a clitchy connection or something, not spending hundreds to fix that lol.
my friend is having the same problem with his car checked the codes and it said one of the front hub sensors are faulty would replacing the sensor fix this problem all togethor or do i need a new abs module
no need for diagnostics as these lights and other problems come down to one problem...abs module!..
so you can actually fix the abs yourself! ill keep that in mind for next time!
There is a guy on ebay who offers a change over service. from memory its $200odd. I recently bought one for my VX from Holden.. $700 later and no more lights on the dash.
