Hey there, i recently painted my ss dash surround in grey/silver similar to the original to cover all the scratches and stuff. i just used export cans from super cheap, 2 or 3 coats of paint and 3 or 4 coats of clear. it looks good but when i put it back in the car it scratched and then i was taking my stereo out (after a couple of beers) and scratched the shit out of it and now it just looks crap. i want to redo it but dont want the same thing to happen. ive read about vinyl dye but not sure if ill have the same problems. any ideas how to get a good finish, or should i just take it somewhere and get it done professionally??? thanks
I can offer some advice. I done mine and it has only 1 or 2 minor scratches after 1 1/2 years.First sand back with wet n dry. Then paint in primer 2 or 3 coats. Then buy some VHT paint from Autobahn in the colour you want and spray at least 3 coats.Lastly buy some clear coat and paint another 2 or 3 coats. It dosn't cost that much more to do this and it looks a million bucks and if done right you will get a decent life span before it scratches.Anyway it worked for me....
sweet thanks for your advice

It's the undercoat that helps, regular paint on plastic just comes off too easily.
I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere
