The hissing sound usually means your aircon system has run out of refigerant (gas). This means you have a leak somewhere. Aircon gas never "runs out" rather it leaks out somewhere. Take it to an aircon specialist and get them to pressure test it (preferably a nitrogen test).

If you're lucky it's only a minor fault like a dodgy schrader valve or o-rings etc. If so you'll just need to replace these then have it re-gassed.

If you're unlucky it'll be the aircon compressor (lots of $ to replace - i just did mine recently). If this is the case check this thread: air con comressor

But i suggest you do a search on these forums using words like "aircon hissing" etc, it should yield several results that discuss this issue.

How does hissing mean its out of refridgerant?

Does the hissing continue for a few seconds once the car is turned of? its likely to be a vacuum leak in the back of the heater controls..

to test the a/c issue, start the car and turn the a/c on, open the bonnet and have a look at the compressor, (bottom pully on passenger side) if its turning on, the whole pulley will be spinning if not the centre will not be moving its a magnetic clutch

the hissing continues the whole time the air con is on. when i turn it off i will have to check that. i have removed all the dash and can hear the hissing around the back of the glovebox but cannot detect the leak from any source.

heater core is on the driver side more so than passengers + he would be losing coolant, seeing the drips left from the drain hole and smelling it...

if you look up under the dash on the passsenger side you can pull the plastics out, on the LHS on the a/c-heater assembly there is a little box (round edges) with 2 vac lines leading to it thats the accumulator for the system be a good place to start for a leak on that side..

do all directions still work etc?

    BULLSHIT!
I do AC and have never heard that load of crap before. I'm not saying it isn't the compressor but saying they only last 5 years is rediculous.

I had my compressor replaced in December 09 and it was the original factory unit. My car is Aug 98 so that's just over 11 years - not bad (237,000km travelled).

I decided to go genuine as (1) i think 11 years is very reasonable and (2) i'm sure i will have updated to a newer car by then anyway (i've already had my VT for 3 1/2 years).

was the compressor and the dryer has not been replaced and it was gone to. not bad 8 yrs old with 87000km on the clock. but not good when trying to sell the car to have this expense. $1100 to do the lot with dryer, compresoor, seals, regas and anything else.
