Exclamation VT engine replacement, please help

I have a 97 VT Acclaim. Recently, I blew the gaskets on the engine, and considering that the engine has done 330,000+ klms, I'm thinking the better option would be to replace the whole engine, rather than spending money on the gaskets, only for the engine to die in the next 6-12 months. I don't know anything about doing this, so I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on doing this, how much it would roughly cost and if anyone knows somewhere in south east melb that can do this? Any help would be much appreciated, because as I mentioned, I have no experience and know nothing about this, and don't really want to be swindled by a mechanic. Thanks.*

A few mechanics i know do an engine swap for about $800, thats a reco engine though, so its not really a good guide. Would you want to put a 5L in it or just a replacement ecotec? Would you be looking to do work to the engine?

Just looking for a replacement, not looking to do any work on it. I've basically gotta get it up and running, and back to norm. Is replacing it with a 2nd hand enginge that's done about 220,000klms an alright thing to do or do you reckon go for a reco?

For a swap over you could get one with alot lower hen 220,000, a guy i work with for 900 got an engine with 120,000 swap over. Just start ringing around and see who can offer you that service.

This may sound stupid, but like I said, I know nothing about this and haven't really dealt with anyone besides my local mechanic, who would I ring around to? Just mechanic or are there specialists out there who do this sort of stuff?

Start with ringing your local one, then they usually give you contacts that do this kind of work if they don't perform them selfs.

Basically just get out the yellow pages and ring every mechanic in the area and get quotes. Be specific about exactly what it is you want.
