    Unhappy Nightmare VT

Okay so I got a few problems going on with my 97' Vt acclaim.

Starting off with the major, over the last few days I have noticed my car is leaking coolant but there is a few other problems going on so I'm not sure if they could be related or not.

I only recently got my car serviced and the mechanic said everything was looking fine and he didn't have to do anything major. The day after the service I was driving and the hot alert flashed up on the dash and the temp gauge flew up but after a few seconds it went off and gauge went back down ... this has happened a few times and I check all my levels each time it happened and it seems to all be fine. This hasn't happened for a little while now.

Also I have had a loud shaking/shuddering/rattling noise start happening, and a squealing noise coming from the belt. So I have replaced the belt and the squealing stopped but loud rattle hasn't stopped. Its really noticeable when the car is in drive (tend not to hear it whilst actually driving though) or reverse, doesn't do it so much in park or neutral. It's really loud and unbearable and seems to be coming from the front passenger side. I have fixed the sway recently bar so I know its not that rattling around.

And now it's leaking coolant, and a lot of it fast!

    Any ideas?
I am so fed up with and the money tree is pretty much stripped bare!

Haha the cover is fine. It isn't a tinny sound, it actually really kinda deep sounding, i dunno its hard to explain. I haven't checked around for leaks yet, had work today and then it was to dark to start fussing around down then.

maybe the shaking and noise is the engine mounts? my vt was idling rough for about a month shaking and noises (only when ideling) ended up being both my engine mounts that were ****ed got them replaced smooth as can be now

A new radiator cap might fix your problem. If the radiator cap is no good then coolant will leak into the overflow bottle.

In my case, a rattling, vibration from front passenger area was the engine sump just touching the front cross member due to sagged engine mounts. Particularly at low speeds when cold. I fitted a 6mm steel packer plate under each mount, this was 3 years ago and have had no more problems.

Have you checked the harmonic balancer ( on the bottom pulley). These things have a habit of crapping themselves and make a bit of noise .

I had a problem with my car overheating. It is a 97 Acclaim Stationwagon. In the end the radiator was leaking coolant and it was not evident because the coolant was leaking and then drying off on the radiator. What it was doing was that the Car was flashing Hot on the dash and i would pull it over and stop the engine for a while. This would bring the temperature down. I ended up replacing the radiator and that fixed any coolant issues. Take the cover off the top and check whether the radiator has any visible coolant leaks.
I never understood the sales of the Kia on the Holden lots here in NZ. I couldnt think of any cars that could be so different.

The coolant has seemed to stopped leaking, but whether or not it will happen again i suppose it will just be a waiting game. I'm going to get a new thermostat and see if that fixes the temp gauge issue and i have worked out that the rattling is coming from the a/c, the seals have worn so the hose is loose causing it to be hit other things. I guess the problem is semi solved.

Im having the exact same issue, replaced my radiator once and thermostat twice and replaced hoses once about a year ago, could it be the clamps? but its still happening, car is fine the just jolts up on the tempreture gauge so quickly. And when the cars left overnight you can see the coolant underneath the passenger side of the radiator and looks like the leaks coming from the hose but the hose doesnt have a whole or anything. Anyone know whats the problem.

Id be looking at the water pump first.

At easy thing to do is let the engine idle, put a long screwdriver on the water pump casing, and put the blunt end against your ear. If you can hear a grinding noise, the bearings are shot, awhich is often caused by the seals letting go and leaking coolant into the nearings, which then drains out of an overflow hole in th epump.

Belt squeal is a symptom not a cause.

Temp going hot then cold then hot then cold is a sign of a dodgy thermostat. It's stopping water flowing properley so the water gets hot. All of a sudden the thermo springs open and the water gets cooled again. So either the Thermostat is buggered or it's set at too high a temperature (I think 87 degrees is about standard). If the thermostat is buggered and your engines getting hot, it could be building up too much vapour pressure in the radiator and that will be forcing coolant out of the overflow.

I've found this site to be a wealth of information, perhaps it could be of help to you? I was considering buying a VT but from what i've heard i wouldn't touch a series one unless it's had the various issues seen to first.

I know its on the opposite side but check your alternator is mounted properly and tight, my mrs's excel was making a really bad knocking/vibrating sound when in gear, turned out the clown shoe who had the car before us didnt mount the alternator properly! just an idea

As far as faults go, I would rather have this car than consider another car that may be likely to have more faults. So far, I havent had any crippling faults, unlike some other cars. These websites are great for diagnosing the faults that are inherent in the production of this car. There are probably websites detailing the problems of Lancers, Integras, Corollas,etc... Its just a case of the devil you know being a better friend than the devil you dont. Plus, i think that i have got near to the end of the list of the faults on my car. Hope that it is smooth sailing from here on out.
