took my ute to get serviced today (at holden), i complained that i thought the gear box was a little noisier than what a normal box should be...
When i picked the ute up the mechanic told me "the gearbox is nacked". He said it needs a rebuild...
Thing is that the utes only done 130,000 ks, and as far as i am aware it hasnt been flogged as the previous owner was an older bloke. I cant see any signs of the ute towing many large loads either. However the holden bloke said it must have been either thrashed or a towing ute...
Ive owned the car for a year, noticed the clutch making a banging sound all the time, gearbox whines 1st 2nd 3rd (but ive heard others that do) and sticks in gears in the morning (often cold)
I have changed the oil myself once in the box, however used all the correct oils
anybody have any ideas, am i getting ripped off or had if i take it back? and are these sounds normal? should it need to be rebuilt and HOW can i tell if the ute has been flogged any way or form?

To be honest mate the getrag's arent the best gearbox in the world I'm a 2nd year apprentice mechanic and ive had countless VU utes, VY's, VT's, VX's and VS's with around 150,00kms and MOST have not been thrashed, but the gearbox still needs a rebuild. This is what put me off getting a manual ecotec... hense my auto VX s2. I say get a quote and keep asking around on what the right price should be. Good luck mate!

When you say you complained it was noisier, what sort of noises is it making?
Dealerships will always try to rip you off as everyone knows with the trick they had with the diffs and axle to claiming to rebuild the diffs.
The whining noise is completely normal for the getrag as they have straighter cut gears.
Could you go into more detail with the clutch issue?
i have the getrag in my VS series 2 commodore my reverse gear is shot and i dont no what it could be there was no shavings in the oil. the oil is good as gold to ? and i dont want a mechanic charing me a grand to look at it anyone got any ideas
