Default VT drive belt squeal at idle

My mate has a vt v6 and the drive belt squeals at idle . Checked all the pullys and their fine cleaned everything up and fitted a new belt and the noise is still their. The water pump has a liitle play and the harmonic balancer has some movment back and forth but doesnt wobble. When you raise the revs the squeal goes away. Anyone have some suggestions?

As long as the belt is at the correct tension, I wouldn't go replacing everything.
There is a product that is meant to stop belt squel and/or slippage. You can buy that sort of stuff at Repco, Supercheap, Autobarn etc. Go down and have a look.

Unfortunately belt squeal is something which affects many V6 Commodores and will be especially noticeable when the belt is cold or damp. (I never experienced it on my VT or VX though).

You can try purchasing a can of "Belt Grip". Remove the belt and give it a couple of very light sprays and let it dry well between applications and before installation.
This may solve the problem for a while but it will return.

There are some other remedies that people try but I would not recommend them because they involve some lubrication of the belt in which event you may well suffer belt slippage.

It is worth double checking the pulleys attached to the belt tensioners to ensure these are not contributing to the noise.

Mate says it has quiten down a bit since driving with the new belt. I repacked 2 of the pullys with new grease. Still to do the tensioner pully.

Might pay to clean them first with metho in case you've spilt coolant over them (renown for causing belt squealing).

Wash the serpentine belt in some warm soapy water and rinse well.

get a bar of soap and rub it on the belt while it is running. The squeal should dissapear right before your eyes and ears.

    *Not a permanent fix*

Mate came over today as the noise has been occuring whilst driving now and we have isolated it to the water pump. The bearing seal has gone on the inside i asume and the bearing has dried out. Fitting a new water pump tomorrow. Will post a reply tomorro.

Noise has gone. When i took the old pump off i noticed it had been leaking. Mate had recently put stop leak in radiator (heater valve leaking)which had stopped the water pump seal from leaking and this has caused the bearings to dry up.Pump was easy to replace. So now has new water pump heater valve thermastat and coolant and is running well again.

I had the same problem with a noisy belt, I would of swarn it was the belt squeaking I even got some of that stop sqeak spray and it did stop it for a short time,,
It turned out to be the top Idler pully I even took it off and spun it and it didn't sqeak but when it was on the car under presser it did.
