Get the Tool, I tried to do it by Hand, no go lol and you can brake the clips if ya not careful lol
Looks like this, Get it from Auto barns, and you get several sizes for other hoses on the car. I spent about a hour one day trying to get it off, got the tool and got it in a few seconds. Be sure to de pressure the fuel lines before doing it. Press the Fuel line in, then press the clips in, then pull it off

I've always done it by hand, push the clip towards the filter, squeeze the tabs at the sides and pull the clip away from the filter. You will have to use a bit of force especially if the filter hasn't been changed for a long time.

Dumb question, but what is the recommended way of doing that (de-pressurising the fuel system)?

The tool if for the other fuel lines in the engine bay. I don't see how those tools would work on the fuel filter connectors, as you said just push, squeeze and pull, quite easy really.

Wish that was true, but mine recently absolutely refused to release, even though I had replaced it about 12 months ago. Even the Ultratune guys had a fight with the thing and next time it gets replaced, the pipes will need to be done too because the fittings are both shagged.
