Hi everyone
Bought a 1999 VT Acclaim wagon about 3 weeks ago and I'm still getting to know it (to be honest, we haven't got to the best of starts! In a nutshell I think the car is a lemon)
Now, something else a bit odd has got my attention. In Melbourne today, its pretty hot and humid so i drove the 40 minutes from work with the air con on. Got home, went inside, came back out 15 minutes later and noticed water running down my carport. Looked under the car and somewhere to the left of the transmission I saw a constant drip.
I know that when air cons are on i think its the condenser's drip water. Just wanna know, is that where the condenser is on the VT's or am I up for more money fixing some other leak? 1 hour later, the leak has stopped. Am I lucky?
For the record, since I bought it I have had to replace window switches, a radiator (got it serviced last week and it sh*t itself just as i got to the mechanic!! LUCKY!) and now I have had two mechanics tell me that my RWC was dodgy. Apparently the gap between the sump and the cross member should be about 10mm but you couldn't stick a magazine in the gap so the engine mounts are shot.
Starting to really miss my old VP!
Sorry for the whinge, just had to get it off my chest!! haha. Please, any advice on this would be welcome.
Ta
It's perfectly normal for water to drip from there, it is just moisture from the air, just like the air con in your house, if you have one, drips water when cooling on a humid day. The condenser is the thing that looks like a radiator at the front of the car, the evaporator is behind the dash.the dash.
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
happens to my VT too mate
Really? You've put my mind at ease a bit!
Just wondering what it is!! Air con condenser, an overflow for the radiator? When the radiator sh*t itself they put in a new one and pressure tested it so Im sure they wouldve picked out a leak like that.
Might have a look when I finish a drive without air con and see what happens
Thanks for the quick replies Accentstencil, kalekale
mbvp73. Some common issues with the VT that will help you decide if yours is a lemon.
4 button power window switch in the console.
Engine mounts.
Radius rod bushes in the engine crossmember.
Front stabiliser links.
Front strut mounts and bearings
Front wheel hubs (abs which you car has)
Drivers seat plastic trim that runs along the side of the seat.
Heater tap.
Inlet manifold gaskets.
Rear main seal
Indicator stalk.
Relays.
All Vt's (and other commodores) will have several of these if not all in their lifetime.
Thanks VSHeaven! Still learning about the VT after 5 1/2 years in a VP!
The 4 switch in the console for the elec windows - It was faulty. Had it cleaned out, so far so good
Engine mounts - Had two mechanics tell me they are in terrible shape, yet it passed roadworthy! (Dodgy, dodgy!!)
Radius Rod Bushes - Had a mechanic today tell me they need replacing (another roadworthy issue too)
Driver seat plastic trim - was replaced before I bought it
everything else is ok (I hope) so you were pretty much spot on with 4 of those points. As for being a lemon, maybe I should let it prove itself! Will keep an eye out for the other points you mention
Oh I forgot. Accentstencil, I think you are right, its probably the aircon evaporator. Will see if it does it with air con off
A word of advice. Don't use your foot to open any of the doors. You will be up for a door speaker grille on said door before you know it.
Yeah, they are pretty pissy arent they? Looking for VT's at least 70% of them were busted! I tell you what though, compared to my VP, the doors are bloody heavy!! So I can understand why someone would want to kick it open with their foot! But I will heed your advice
They are no better or worse than any commodore. Basically, if you spend some time and money on it, service it regularly and treat it with respect you will get a lot of painfree motoring out of it. They are pretty resilient....just needs some regular attention and love.
