    Default Key barrel rotating

A mate has a vt commdore with a big issue.
the key goes in all the way, but when u try to turn it, it just keeps turning. nothing works and nothing happens. goes all the way round.
what would be involved in getting it fixed? ie, how much would holden charge? can i do it myself? what would i need to do?
    cheers

It could be that the shaft that goes into the ignition switch has broken off, a common problem. If so, the barrel needs replacing. A new barrel will cost about $50 and it will need to be set to fit your key. It is not too difficult to do yourself with the right instructions.

A philips head screw driver is all you need and a Gregory's manual will tell you how to do it. The manual will cost between $40-50 and save you heaps of money, it will probably cost you more than that to have the barrel replaced.

For what it's worth, buy a new cylinder p/n 92172018 from your holden dealer then suck up to your local locksmith if you arent tech savvy enough to remove and replace the cylinder. BTW, the cylinder will be uncoded on purchase and will need to be coded to your existing key by a locksmith anyway, unless you know how to do this prodedure............which I highly doubt. Do yourself a favour, Buy the cylinder and get a locksmith to come and fix it. The cost will be worth the drama.

You would be looking at 60 bucks for a cylinder, plus locksmith recoding (guess 30 bucks) + labour to change it. This will obviously be more expensive if they have to come your place.

It might be worth your while to get a mobile locksmith out to have a look.

If you can't wait a locksmith will charge around $150 - $190. Generally all locksmiths carry them on them. It's such a common problem. Happened to me.... but i did it myself.

This happened to me not too long ago. I just went to a wreckers and got a barrel and key for less than $25. Replaced the barrel and just swapped keyheads and all was well.

i had a mobile locksmith do mine , it cost me $110 and honestly the amount of fuc*ing around he had to do i wouldn't of had any issues paying $250. PAY A MOBILE LOCKSMITH is my opinion
