    Default VT Service

    Hi
Newbie here, so dont jump on me if I havnt searched properly.
Anybody have a "rough" idea for the cost for a head gasket replacement and a steering rack for a 1998 VT at a mechanics. Im a "Tooltard" so cant do it myself. The car has done 195K and is showings its age.
Wish I could upgrade.. but financially challenged ATM.
    Many thanks for any advice.
    Cheers

VTPete...first up, why the need for the head gaskets replacements? But if its a blown gasket then you should do both for peace of mind. There would be quite some labour time involved but if you can get out of it for under 500 bucks including all parts then count yourself lucky. You can get an exchange steering rack for about 250 bucks if you are willing to try around plus labour to fit it up. The rack won't include tie rod ends so if they are worn then expect to pay more.

    Hi VTPete

I had a mechanic do a check on my VT Acclaim and was told my steering rack needs replacing. To S+F a reco steering rack I was quoted $560. It's done a seal or something near one of the rack boots. Might just have to leak a little fluid till I get the money to fix it!

    Hope this helps

    Thanks for the replies..
Head gaskets are old...and both are weaping bad. They are the originals..not bad for 190K.
I hope the T rod ends are ok..running 16' rims atm.
Steering Rack isnt as urgent as the head gaskets...
Using 3 litres of oil every 6 months..so pretty urgent..

Are you talking about your rocker cover gaskets by any chance?
If your head gaskets are leaking, you lose compression - real bad etc. etc
Leaking oil out of the rocker cover gasket sounds like what you are on about.
They are about $18 each i think and are really easy to fit.
There could be more to it than just leaking rocker cover gaskets. My car is burning a bit of oil i think, because i don't have a pool of oil wherever i park my car, which isn't n necessarily bad because it means the engine is still being lubricated, i just have to keep it topped up! (5 litres in the past 8 months!)

Have you tried tightening the rocker box holding bolts? Might slow the weep if they are the cause.
My engine has roughly done the same kilometers, and has never had any leaks...................yet.
