    Default Servicing 1999 Car

i want to carry out a service on my 1999 vt equipe, wagon.

just want to change the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter and fuel filter.
im just after buying it, and when i accelerate it chugs a bit before it picks up, hopefully this service will help a bit??

just wondering what sort of oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and spark plugs should i get?
im going to be going to repco to get these parts, will i just tell them the make and model and let them give me the parts, or specify what i want.

when fitting the spark plugs, do i have to bother with the gap or just take them out of the box and fit them in?

also there is a rattling noise coming from the passanger front wheel when it goes over bumps or rough tarmac, any rough ideas of what this could be?

and lastly when going to a mechanic for a service, should i go to holden themselves or just my usual mechanic.

Make sure you check the gap before you put the sparkys in, should be in the owners manual. Oil is 15w-40 but the brand is your choice, air filter and oil filter- i go ryco usually and never had a problem but again brand is your choice.
Fuel filter you need a special tool to replace.
rattling noise could be many things- loose wheel bearing, flogged out bearing in the strut, loose shockie, rubbers worn out in the arms sway bar etc. the list goes on. best get under and have a good check over everything and see if theres anything obvious, and see if you can feel any play in the suspension anywhere.
I would just use my regular mechanic, by now he should have seen enough of them to have a good idea of what to look for.

oh and with the chugging its probably a bit carboned up in the throttle body or has clogged injectors or something else, shouldnt be very serious. See what its like after the service.

You don't need a special tool to remove the fuel filter, I just use a pair of multi grips. You need to push the connections in towards the filter and then squeeze the little tabs in with the multi's and they'll pull off.

Oil: As mentioned any 15w-40 should be fine..
Oil filter: Ryco Z154 (I think)
Spark plugs: NGK BPR6EFS15 (I think)
    Air filter: Ryco (no idea)
    Fuel filter: Ryco (no idea)

The plugs are usually good to go straight out of the box but it wouldn't hurt to check the gaps.
I'd put money on the rattling sound being your swaybar linkpin. The bushes are probably worn or a nut is missing.
As for the chugging, if it doesn't go away after the service, it might be worthwhile to put some Nulon "Total Fuel System Cleaner" in with a full tank of petrol.
    Hope that helps mate,

    -Nick.

If you buy a Gregory's workshop manual for about $40-50, it will guide you through all you want to do. Tho cost of the manual will be a lot less than the money you would pay someone else to do it and it will come in handy for many other repairs.
