Hey guys.
Sorry if this is in the wrong spot this forum is a little hard to navigate..
I've just got a VX Berlina S2 and the aircompressor is dead.
Local mechanic said $650 for compressor and $450 for fitting and all the seals etc..
Now.. I said.. no thats a load of crap.. I can get a brand new compressor on eBay for $399.
But!!
Ive spotted one second hand for $25 !!
However.. its from a VZ not a VT/VX/VY ... So.. Will it fit??
Cant find any info in the search and cant find anything on google.
Might as well leave this up for discussion.

If you have to replace your compressor in your car you have to purge the system first (Suck the refrigerant out or recover it)
You can not let the refrigerant go out into the atmosphere it is illegal and heavy fines apply.
Then after the purge then you can take the compressor of and fit in a new one.
And then since the system has been open you need to get the moisture out so you need to evacuate it.
Then you can charge the system (fill refrigerant in the system)
You wont be able to do this your self. Unless your a license Air-con tec.
Also, a new filter/drier is recommended by the air con experts.
Some good advice!
No way on earth am I attempting this install myself.
I was just shocked by my quote.
$650 for a new one!!! and $450 for fitting!!!
So I found a second hand unit for $60 and I'm paying my mechanic the $450 for fitting. That includes new filter/seals + remove gas + regas.
If he tells me the $60 aircompressor ( That is from a wrecked VX with very low Km's ) is no good then I'll buy a new one from ebay for $350 and still save money.
Flipping hate mechanics who charge you the earth for parts then turn around and charge you the universe for labor aswell. I respect the skills they have but its pathetic how much they charge.
So they can charge a different price depending on the suburb?? what the..
More on topic..
Just out of interest.. Will a VZ compressor fit in a VX? ( I've since found a VX one but I'm still interested )
I was sure the VZ was the 3.6L and the VT, VX, VY are all 3.8L so wouldnt the compression etc etc be different?
Have you tried an auto elec they usually do aircons. Does yours still have gas in it? I can't see it taking anymore than an hour or two to put on a compressor, the seals are just where the hoses bolt on and a friend recently got his regassed for about $70. Recfiever driers are fairly inexpensive as well and probably need to be replaced with a compressor but as yours is second hand maybe no need.
$450 seems alot to fit,the one in my old vq was going to cost $100 to fit and $120 to regas.
hmm.. I think I'll do some calling around.
Cheers guys will let you know how I go.
Mate, you should have said. I could have given you a hand to put it in then all you'd need to do is get it gassed up. It's not really too much of a hassle if you have the ring spanners with ratchets built into them.
Also, I tested the aircon before I took it out and all works sweet so this compressor should be perfect for you.

Mick, Cheers man but I didnt think I was able to remove and refit an aircompressor myself? I thought the system had to be de-gassed before I could remove my old unit..
Well turns out its getting fitted and gassed/ resealed + all the extra crap for $350 this thursday ( guy even comes to my place and does it )
Not bad at all.
Ok so All up I paid $450 for fitting.
Was quoted $350 but he had to replace the TX Valve so $450 +$85 for compressor.
Not bad.. not bad at all.
