Hi there
When driving my vt sometimes it cuts out for a second and all lights come on the dash
Then engine starts itself again
Anyone heard of this happening befor???????
Any advice????![]()
i havent any advice for this, but it has happened on my VT once or twice also. only it didnt start itself again, i just jumped on the clutch and fired it up myself and kept going.
hasnt done it for a few months since, but i rekon if it happens again an error should be logged in the codes one would think...
What do you mean the engine cuts out itself and then starts itself.?
Does the car totally cut off then after you got to start it with the key or the car seems to almost cut out then pick back up again?. be more specific does the lights constanly stay on the dash.
If this happens when the car is hot and the car totally cut out then it could be the CAS.
Check for fault codes and go from there.
Bridge pins 5/6
It is behind the passenger side kick panel.(Wear the passenger puts there feet on the left you will see a cover)
Behind this will be the PCM/ECU.
If you are going to keep this car and do work on it i suggest that you buy the Gregory's book for your car. Unless you no how it all works.
Problems with a key reader....
Could also be a faulty instrument cluster...
Could be a ABS control unit, which is located just under the ABS pump...

hiya, yes i have a similar problem with my VT acclaim, mine cuts out completely, then either starts right away or I have to wait a few minutes...I've replaced the fuel pump but this has not done anything, i'm trying a CAS next, if that doesn't work then I guess i'll try an auto electrician!! sooo frustrating as I also got a diagnostic done which came up with no faults...i'd guess a mechanic would have to drive around until it cut out to know what we meant!!! let me know how you get on.........
It could be your crank angle sensor. I had a problem where almost every time I turned right the car would almost stall and all instrument lights would come on, sometimes i could get it to keep going, and other times it would stall. but it could be a number of things. best thing is to try the engine fault code (look it up in the search bar or 'how to' section), better yet, pay a mechanic $50 to come out and check it and then you will know for sure
I also have vt Acclaim 1998 model 245,000 km
Same model as yours???
How often does this happen a month???
I only drive mine on weekend cause i have work car mine about 2-3 times a month
Let me know if the CAS fix's it...And if you find anymore info that will be great!!
I just hope someone out there has had this exzact same problem as us???????? And tell us how to fix??
My VT (Acclaim '99 170,000kms) used to cut out and all the dash lights would come on and the low fuel jingle would play.
I changed my ABS module and it hasn't happened since.
The only problem I have now is that when I'm on less that half a tank of fuel and go right, especially around a round about it cuts out when going from 2nd to 3rd.
Auto electrician said it could be the fuel regulater? Going to get it servived ect next week so I'll let you know.
I have a 98VT and have been having the exact same problem lately. The car just loses all electrical power and stalls. It will start straight away no problems. I have taken to the mechanic and he could not find any error codes, thr CAS is fine, leads and plugs were done but it keeps doing the same thing.
I have gone to the auto electrician but he cannot find anything wrong with it.
This si driving me crazy.
Hi there did you end up finding out what was wrong with your car? My car is doing exactly the same thing... I lose accelerator and she will stall. Replaced ABS module but didnt fix the problem. Has it got something to do with the fuel?? Please help me.....
and mine. going through a small roundabout, motor stalled, no brakes or power steering. Just managed to get to the side of the road, started again fine. Has not happened since. Scary. I hope someone has fixed this fault on their car. If so, what was the fault?
Hope fully i can help all you blokes out , i too had this very frustrating problem , mine ended up being a bad connection on my fuel pump in the tank ( and a brand F#@kin new one at that ) i did everything CAS fuel filter plugs , leads , the list goes on an on drove me insane it just kept doing it sometimes even leavin me stranded on the side of the road . Eventually i had enough an pulled back out the tank an inspected the pump thats when i found it , the connection on the top part of the pump assembly was dodgy whilst the pump was running i wiggled the wires an bang it cut out wiggle em again an of she'd go , i looked to the heavens and thanked the aliens , after 3 long months i had found my culprit . I squashed up the pin connecters an made sure that the pump didnt cut out when i wiggled the shit outta the wires an havent had a problem since .
Also my father inlaws VR would cut out going round corners when he had under half a tank , we found that the fuel filter was on the wrong way round .
To check ur fuel pressure reg pull the vacuum line off the back of it and wipe ur finger over the hole , if u get petrol on ur finger , its stuffed
At 43 a wealth of info , but still heaps to learn
I am not sure if i had found the problem yet
But in the mean time it hasn't happened
But reading other post's I cleaned the 3 plug at the fire wall as someone els had this problem and one corried.....
Or if you havn't already clean all the earths and clean all the wire's going to battery and replace the terminals if they look old
Also the next thing i am looking into at cleaning the earth thats on the engine mount
As everything els has been done
Installed heavey gauge wire from alternator to battery
new alternator new batterey ect ect
i too am having the same problem with my VT calais. seems to happen very randomly once every couple of weeks. one thing ive noticed though is just before it happens, im getting a whining noise coming through my car audio like ive got a bad earth. i've checked that but it's fine. seems to be a common problem by the looks of it, so surely some one can shed some light on it for us
first thing is get the alternator checked, this was the problem with my vt. also see if the key is good. try another key if you have one.
i do as the voices tell me
Hi all.
I too am having the same problem with my 2000 V6 VT . Driving along and all of a sudden, blackout. Engine stalls, but no lights come on. I'm lucky so far, in that this lasts for no more than 10-15 seconds and the engine jumps back into life. I am thinking it may be a problem with my BCM as I have had also failures with my power windows. Will investigate further as soon as I can get enough funds to do repairs.
replaced battery earth cable and battery terminals and it hasn't done it since. headlights are also a lot brighter now too.
someone kill me please!~
had a vt ecotec doing this in thought it was an afm problem
anyways ended up being a blown head gasket leaking combustion into coolant jackets (via gasket) worse when hot
no milkyness or anything
the head shop said its very common and the only way they found to find it
is basic compression test when car is hot after fans have come on~!
an expensive mistake on my behalf wont be getting me again!~
bit of techie stuff~!
the cylinder was down by more than 10% compared to others thats only indication
and a wet test when hot didnt change compression reading from dry test
whats a blown head gasket got to do with an electrical issue? some one?
