    Default VX Calais Braking Issue?

    Hello,

I've got this issue with my VX Calais. Whenever I drive about 80km/hr or higher and start to use the brakes the front wheels start to shudder (vibrate). You can feel it on the steering wheel starts to shake, and hear it. I've got 95% tread on my tyres, I replaced the Disc Rotors, my first thought was maybe they were warped, but that didn't solve the issue. My brakes still have a decent amount of padding but I have not replaced those.

What could be the problem? I've taken it to a mechanic and he says there is nothing wrong with it.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

Did he throw a dial gauge over the front rotors to check for run out?

You can check the wheel bearings/hubs (sealed unit) yourself pretty easily. Remove the wheel, brake calipre and disc rotor, leaving nothing but the hub itself. It's easy to spin by hand and if it makes noise and/or clunks when you are spinning it at a consistant speed then they are a likely cause.

I had a VT an I swore black and blue to all sorts of mechanics that the wheel bearings were gone, causing vibration and noise and they all said "nope they're fine... will probably be the tyres or wheel balance".
New tyres, balances and alignments laterd I had the front link kit fitted the noise and vibration was still there so I took it straight back to the mechanic, I said "I think it's the wheel bearing". He jacked the front of the car up, spun the wheels and said "nope, tyres".
    Total morons.

I did what I've said above, sure enough the bearings had packed it in. Replaced them with a new pair I got from eBay and TADA, noise and vibration gone!
I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere

Is it possible that my brake pads could be the issue? Because there's no problems with the car when I'm driving, It's only once I apply the brakes. I've never checked the brand or anything but most likely its some generic brand or worse. This problem has been ongoing since I purchased the car in August 09, haven't changed the brake pads yet. I've put on Bridgestone Turanza's; wheels have been realigned, these tyres are great.

I bought new Disc Rotors for my VT Calais, and since I thought the Rotors in my VX were no good I put the VT rotors in my VX (which were working 100% fine on the VT), the problem is still there. So I'm certain its not the rotors. When I pulled apart the Rotors, Callipers etc. I turned the hub and I'm almost certain there was no abnormal sounds coming from it.

Like I said the brakes had plenty of padding on them, but maybe the brakes themselves are no good. When I bought the car, the Air condition was broken, literally bald tyres, wrong touch up paint on stone chips, and the right tail light was replaced with an Executive light (no reflectors). I'm sure the previous owner was a cheap skate, bought the car cheap tho :P

check your strutbar to chassis bushes. these are fluid filled and i have seen some with upto 50mm of lateral movement under brakes. these will most definately cause wheel vibration under brakes. just put your car in drive with your foot hard on the brake pedal and rock the car backwards and forwards and feel for any movement.
