Hi guys, I thought i would post this up. I have a m8 considering buying a VR with a 355, so he can swap the engine into his 5L VT SS.
What problems are we likely to encounter?
VR has T-5, VT has getrag.
Cheers, Col.

Engine can't be older than the car.
That's right mate,
You can't put an older engine into a new car generally.
Maybe you can with some very exspensive re-engineering of the motor and exhaust, though it wouldn't be worth it if you could.

Hi mate technically the above posters are wrong. But I'll try and set it straight. While you can use an engine older than the car it needs to meet the emmisions standard the car came with, For anything in the VL-VS S2 range that's ADR 37/00 so all those engines are interchangable. The problem for you is that the VT ran ADR 37/01 which is a bit stiffer and as with most things in the car making world, nothing gets changed or updated unless it has to and in Australia engines only change when the laws make them. ADR 37/01 runs from the dates 1 / 1 / 1997 - 1 / 1 / 2003 so you have to run engines from that date range or a later ADR.
Now there's possibly a way you can do this but someone (you) is going to have to find out when the last series 2 5 litre VS's were built before they went to the maf engine. If there were some built during 37/01 (after 1/1/97) then you will be ok to run the earlier motor, if not then legally you will be out of luck, but I mean you would be very unlucky for anyone to notice/care that you were running the earlier 5 litre and 90% of rego places wouldn't know the difference. I will try and find out if there were any ADR 37/01 series 2 VS's.
Update: There's VS S2 in my family and it's built 10-06-97 which should make it a ADR 37/01 car I'll have to find the ADR on it myself though but so far it looks positive for early 5 litre into VT action

You could just install the intake system with the MAF sensor, plug it in to a wire that isn't actually connected if it's a pre-MAF engine
Not that I would recommend such shifty actions....
I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere
Cheers for the replies.
The VT is a series 1 '98.
Not sure what the engine that is in the VR is from. It could be factory, but not sure.
From the RTA website (ther may be other relevant sites for your state):

Emission standards for replacement engines
1972 and later model vehicles with substitute engines must meet the intent of the later of the Australian Design
Rules applicable to either:
a) The original vehicle; or
b) The substitute engine.
To ensure continued compliance with emission standards, any replacement engine should come from a vehicle which
is subject to the same or more stringent emission control requirements. An alternative is for an earlier engine to be
upgraded during reconditioning to more recent engine specifications. All anti-pollution devices should be fitted and
functional.
