    Default clutch removal

how hard is it to replace a clutch in a 6speed manual ls1? id assume the tranmisson has to come out and everything, my clutch is on its way out and want to replace with a zgrip or something similar and was thinking itd be a good time over easter. I dont have any cash to pay mechanics as im going to bali and need the $$ haha.

well its not a fun job even when the cars on a hoist, remove shifter , remove exhaust, remove tailshaft, remove clutch fluid line, split the box from the bellhousing, take the bellhousing off, clutch pressure plate off, flywheel off, remove spigot bearing, replace spigot bearing, fit flywheel, fit clutch assembly and use a proper alignment tool (you will be so much happier when the input shaft just slides in.....) bellhousing on, gearbox back on, fit clutch fluid line and buy a bleed nipple adaptor from extreme clutches (so you can bleed it without it being a raging homo...) check rubber couplings on tailshaft for cracks, tailshaft on, exhaust back on, shifter on....

thats about it, but its not as easy as it sounds even with the right tools and experience
had quite a bit of practice and theres been alot of "kind" words exchanged with some cars

i also rekon with those tex clutches that the warranty bit says its only valid if fitted by a qualified mechanic :P so its probably worth getting done properly... have a mate who broke a twin plate clutch from that mob after 430 k's and they swapped it for another one with no questions asked. pretty good service if anything does go wrong with it

think they need a repair order for warranty if they ask, pretty reliable clutches tho you shouldnt have a problem...
it would be best to have some 2.5 (ish) tonne jack stands and a creeper to roll around on

Its a pretty big job but definately not one of too much difficulty.
Hardest thing to do would be replacing spigot and make sure the clutch is alligned properly.
Rest might seem complicated but its realistically only a few nuts and bolts just takes some time and patience.

How many hours did it take you to do the job?
Did you replace the flywheel or get it machined? And what did you do alignment wise, the Holden manual says that you need to push the spline in with a lever or something...weird.

pretty much 10am till 4pm over 2days altho i had a carton of coronas handy. Personally its worth the money paying someone to do it haha. The clutch i got came with new clutch plate and flywheel and i used a plastic alignmeant tool i got from a preformance shop when i brought the kit from them.

if u do do it urself, id recommend two people under to take the box out coz its pretty heavy lol and i took it out with the bellhousing and box all in one piece, when u do that, u gotta rotate the box 90 degrees towards the drivers side

I hear there will be a few kind words exhanged between you and the car during the job.
I hear that the labour cost of the job is quite substantial, which is why I am leaning towards doing it myself, however, but I don't want to be stuck without a car if I stuff it up.
Anyone had or have any quotes to get the job done?
