Hi Guys,
Just a quick query, my friend has just purchased a Series 2 VX SS, it has developed a rather metal on metal clunking when rolling, he's a little worried, what could be the problem with this? a bearing was just replaced on the car the day before, it still has a 2 year warranty so atleast he won't cop a large bill, but does anyone know what it could be? any signs that we can check and see what it is? it does appear to be coming from the rear.
Cheers,
jamie
This is the LSD locking. If they replaces the oil in it but did not use any friction moddifier then it will lock almost instantly (Effectivly a welded diff)
No damage will occure running it like this but it means turning around will drag a wheel. buy the modifier and add it in bit by bit till the clunk sound dissapears. don't add too much or the LSD will not lock.
could it be brakes?
could it be cv joints?
does it do it in reverse?
you can get chatter noise from the diff if your doing burnouts and its not locking properly(spinning one wheel) but under normal drive it should be quiet???? might be time to take off the rear cover and have a look.. if its clunking maybe theres some chunks floating around in there....clunking isnt good!!
my diff makes a slight whine..(slightly over tightened the pinion flange nut when i swaped over my last diff-they have a collapsable spacer-little did i know i thought f/t was the go.. i havent botherd getting it fixed as local holden dealer says its ok.. ill wait till i get a new crown wheel n pinion with better gear ratio...

i think you will find the clunking is called chatter.... n yes maybe theres not enough friction on the cones... but like its hard to tell i would listen to these other guys they seem to be the experts n hey its obviosly the cheaper option to try first... although i cant see why a cone would be slipping to start with driving striaght without wheelspin????????
cheers for the info so far guys, will pass it on tonight, it does only happen when pulling into a drive way and/or turning, so it appears that yes it could be dragging a wheel?
Okay i may have been confused a little, it doesn't happen as such when driving straight, just turnings, and it is really only noticeable at rather slow speeds (ex. pulling into driveway, turning at a give way/stop sign).
and apparently yes, even if in reverse it is doing it.
This almost certainly is the diff then. It will make it at faster speeds but you probably do not notice it.
The standard oil makes the LSD SUPER Grippy and will cause the lsd to lock almost instantly. Giving you effectively a welded diff.
Even in a straight line it might grip a little if you put down a bit of power. Most certainly on any manuver that required one wheel to go faster than another (Light swerve ETC) you will invoke the need to allow slip on the diff and it will refuse.(Clunk)
The modifier allows slip on the cones meaning it should only grip when the car looses traction to 1 wheel. By adding the modifier a bit at a time untill the clunk is gone means its slipping enough for normal use then when you give it a handful it will still function as a LSD.
