does anyone know the difference between the two??? my v8 trans needs fixing unfortunately although=---i have a good condition v6 trans same yr model just sitting around gathering dust.. is it possible to use it behind my ls1 just by swapping the bellhousing/outut?????

As far as I know you take the bellhousing off (good luck with that, really really REALLY hard) and then remove the oil pump and that removes the input shaft. But I'm no expert.

4L60-E simply means:
4 - 4 forward speeds
L - Longitudinally mounted (front to back)
60 - Torque handling capability
E - Electronically controlled
So, all mechanical components will be capable of handling the torque, but whether they fit the different engine is another thing. Electronic valve body etc might operate differently too, along with ratios etc.
This transmission has been manufactured since about 1987, so you can imagine has gone through a lot of changes since.

I was under the impression it was a aftermarket because I had to get one installed in my VY SS gearbox.That is interesting, I thought it was only an aftermarket upgrade.
just to butt in i would like to know the answer to this aswell i have a stage 2 shift kitted 4l60e in my v6 vs but wanna chuck an 8 in the bay wanna know if i can keep my box
