    Default Ls1 head gaskets

    Iv rung around a mjllion shops n everyone seems to say that all the head gaskets providing there the right size are interchangeable between the different ls1 motors(97-04) im confused from wat i have found ls1 heads with a casting number 853 have some notch in them that requires special gaskets??? wat is the notch can it just be ground down???? and normal gaskets used??? im confused... here is some info from a us supplier this jus confuses me more.... please read...


    Some early LS1 engines used cylinder head casting number #853, and #941 which has a notch in the deck and requires a different head gasket set. 1997, 1998, and 1999 #853 and #941 Casting LS1 Kit includes everything you need to remove and replace your cylinder heads on your LS1 engine. There are some 853 casting numbers on 2000 vehicles, that may or may not have the notch. If it does not have the notch, you will need LS1HGK01. If you have any questions, please give us a call.     so were does that leave me???? holden says i should use there gaskets wich cost $$500.00(true)...

    soooo..... can i just grind the notch down???? i havent taken my heads off yet so i cant tell if they have the notch or not... arrrggghhh!!!!!!! its a december "99"built motor so holden says(using the vin num)..
    if you read the part above where it says some 2000 models do and some dont have the notch this is were im confused as holden told me the motor is classed as a 2000model....please help???? iv already ordered gaskets suitable for no notch heads fingers crossed thats why im askin if its possible to just grind down the notches.....

    haha! iv found out you can file the notches off! this is greAT news....wat a pain but all gud now thanks anyway guys!!! i wonder how many ppl walk into this problem blind! i seriously asked many well known engine builders in brisbane about this n all they could say was never heard of any notches! all heads n gaskets are interchangeable providing bore size is right... welll im not so sure i wud lay my trust in them now...
