What is the car insured for and who with? From my experience they will write it off if they think they can make more money from the salvage, remember if it's a write off your policy also cancels and you get none of it back. I smashed my old Torana years ago and the NRMA tried to write it off, I got a quote for less than the sum insured, got the second hand panels from the trading post and delivered to my panel beater and cancelled the claim and had the car fixed then I gave them the bill, under the law at the time they were obliged to fix it. All they wanted to do was to check it was fixed properly which it was then they paid up no arguments.
If you really like the car get a quote yourself, even using second hand parts and panels if need be and then see if it's cheaper for you to argue wit them or just buy it back for $800 and fix it yourself. If it hasn't damaged the radiators I can't see there being that amount of damage on it. Do you have any pictures?
