How low should I go lowering a VT Berlina to give a streetable look without losing too much in driveability (given I have to negotiate dirt roads quite often). I know its a bit of an opinionative problem, but any advice would be welcome.

i got a vx calais needs lowering too , so im deciding what springs to mate , so hope u get some responses for me to see, i want my level tho , no ass up in the air
yeah. its the 'ass in the air' that troubles me most too
If you're going on dirt roads, much as I do living out in the country, I wouldn't be lowering it.
The most common thing to do to eliminate that arse in the air look is to go one lower in the back than the front. So low in the front, and super low in the back, and this will still be fine for use on gravel roads. You're not going to be 4WD'ing in a Commodore anyway*.
Our lowering kits (King Springs and KYB shortened shocks) for either of your cars are $675:

Also given you haven't got exec models (Berlina and Calais) it might be worth checking to see what height you're starting with by measuring the hub (centre of wheel) to guard measurements...
* Unless you've got a Cross 6 or 8, which are actually quite capable off road, particularly the Cross 6 One Toner which has significantly better approach and departure angles than the Crewman or Wagon based AWD variants...

I just used lows all round. Looks really good. similair clearance front and rear.
thank you for the replies
what if I just lower the rear, where I would expect that the front would naturally lower just a little in the process anyway. That might seem the best compromise for keeping it friendly on dirt roads, not having to worry about the front spoiler on drains etc, yet getting away from that 'ass in the air look'
i had a 98 VT sedan and went super lows all round with camber kit and she sat nice and level, not too low but low enough for that "fat" look. personally though if i was drivin dirt roads quite a lot super lows will be too low and i would choose just lows.
i have my '01 VX lowerd on super low king springs.. it sits at a good height and also clears 90% of bumps...
Ashes to ashes and dust to dust, if it weren't for Fords our tools would rust.
