Got my first service coming up (bought it at 114k), so just wondering is this a major one? Any ideas how much it would cost with no major problems?
Is there anything I can do to make it a bit cheaper, as in do the work myself?
My breaks are making a squealing noise when I apply the breaks, and I am told this is the normal mechanism to let the driver know that the break pads need to replaced?
Also, my aerial is broken; it does not go up or retract when the car turns on. It is currently just permanently up. Is this something easy to fix? There is nothing wrong with the reception.
I am using a VS handbook but for it a 120,000km service includes:
Change oil and Filter
Check fluid levels: brake, clutch, power steering, auto transmission, washer. Check coolant inhibitor % with tester and check level.
Check battery electrolyte
(V8) Check condition and tension of all engine drive belts using gauge
Check for signs of deterioation and/or leaks from engine, fluid reservoirs, air ducts, all hoses and clamps
Vacuum check for PCV valave operation
Replace spark plugs
If you are handy with a wrench and socket set you could actually do all this yourself.
Sqealing is an indicator of low brakes or it could be just dust or glaze over the rotors. If you do get it serviced then get them to check the brakes.
Regarding the antenna it is most likely that the plastic "rope" that inside the aerial has broken or worn out. You will need to buy a new rope and fit it (or once again get the guys to do it if you take it to be serviced).
All depends on whether or not you have the service history. Air filter, fuel filter, plugs should be replaced every 20,000 IMO. Probably could do with a diff oil change and auto fluid and strainer changed, too. All easy to do yourself if you're mechanically minded. Best of luck, mate either way.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
