Just replaced the radiator and wanted to take a look at the thermostat. Bad decision opening the housing as all the rubbers were perished and i knew i would be able to re install it, in as bad condition as it it.
Now i currently have no thermostat in there.
I do know that back in the day the old man never used to use one and i know a couple of people that don't use one in some older cars.
My question is any down side.......
yes i know that the car will take longer to warm up and thus increasing my fuel consumption in a most insignificant manor.
What i want to know is there going to be any long term damage.
Keeping in mind i am running 10PSI pulley.
Cheers guys
I ve been running my VT for 2 years now without a thermostat
Its fine nothing will happen
just dont boost it till its up to temperature .all the engine parts need to get to operating temp before they expand and take up all the slack in there respective holes and can rattle round doing damage.and you will get extra wear if it doesnt warm up fast enough or continously runs cold
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
im not a mech by a long shot but i have a mate whom is a damn good mech and hes told me that these engines need the thermostat and shouldnt be run with out them
itll be fine for the short term but you should definitely still replace it.
the ecotecs run very cold without a thermostat and the computer will probably just stay in warm-up mode, using more fuel and certainly not running the engine at its optimum. there's also the problem of all the engine components and engine oil not getting hot enough and contributing to extra wear.
so basically, itll be fine for a couple of days, but get a new one.
declowizzid said dont boost till its up to temperature, but I found with my VS ecotec when it ran without a thermostat, it never got up to normal temp.
looks like i know what i am doing sunday.................
As the rest have said, get one back in there. If you don't get to a decent operating temp, long term, you risk carboning up the internals.
QldKev
I've pulled aspart engines that have been run for a while without thermostats and there is always a lot of crud on things like the inside of rocker covers, valve gear etc and the small oil passageways will also over time block up. As I said before the detergents in the oil need to be at a certain temperature to work properly and keep your engine clean, this won't be achieved without a thermostat.
Agree with running a thermostat. Engines runmore efficiently when warm, and the thermostat gets the engine to operating temp faster and then regulates it.
I have been runing with no thermosat and average tem 75/85 degrees thats on a average day ...when raining or cold days runs colder
So would there be something wrong with my ratiator???
As with thermosat same tem???
My thermostats open up at 98deg celsius (OEM Holden components), what will be the benefits of changing to FIT thermostats which open up at 81deg celcius? There are three thermostats in my engine do i have to replace all three or do i have to just change one? Which thermostat will benefit the most from being replaced with the one from FIT? I'm thinking of changing from Castrol premixed coolant to NULON coolant by end of June when its due for annual servicing. Has anyone done this?
3 thermostats? where abouts are they? I've been using Nulon long life coolant for years in a few Commodores and no problems. Just flush your whole system out with clean water and then drain it, make sure you get at least 6 litres out (1/2 the capacity) then add 6 litres of Nulon long life concentrate and top up with clean water. You don't have to use the Holden pellets with Nulon either. My car has standard Holden thermostat and no problems with temp. Had my old VN nearly 10 years and never had a problem either and never changed it.
you have 3 thermosats?????
Where are they i always thought there is only one????????
^ there is only one mate
