I am trying to tell if I have a water pump problem, without taking it off. Could someone tell me how much water they should flow, mine seems not to flow much

Yes and no! It normally does not appear to be, but the heads are right on the verge of boiling the water, if you release the slightest amount of preasure from the radiator you can hear the water in the heads start to boil and steam starts to escape from the radiator, straight after a run. When I tow, I get about 20 K's and it boils if I stop, on both occasions the temp gauge has not shown hot, but climbs when I stop the motor New radiator, hoses, thermostat and flush done. When I removed the thermostat, and Idle the motor, only about a cup of water is pumped in about ten seconds, at about 2000 rpm maybe about 10 to 15 titres a minute comes thru. So I am wondering if it is pumping enough water or not.

Could be air in the system, did you bleed it when you changed the radiator?

Absolutly bled, all air removed. Last thing left is the pump, so I was trying to find out the normal flow rate before I replace it, in case this flow is normal. I suspect corosion of the impeller.

I have no idea of what the flow rate should be but what you have described does not sound like much at all. It might be worth removing it to check, if it's ok then it is only going to cost you a gasket and a bit of coolant.

i would replace it, they are pretty cheap to replace if you do it yourself and then you also got peace of mine that it is brand new.

on another note, when you refilled and bled the cooling system did you have the heater blasting on full hot while doing it? if you didnt then there will most likely still be air in the system

Yes I had the heater set as per the manual, but the flow of water just seems very slow/ low, and thanks for all replys, great help.

If you are only getting about a cup of coolant out of the top hose at 2000revs over 10 seconds, I would definatelly be removing the pump to check it out.

If you take off the pressure cap when the motor is hot your reducing the pressure in the cooling system and the boiling point of water increases with pressure so the coolant will begin to boil.
If the water pump was shot it would probably overheat if your towing or not. The impeller fins may be corroded off the pump or the radiator may be blocked. Removing the pump is not hard and if it is OK you can either replace it with a new one or just get a new gasket and re use it.

Time to close the thread, I fitted a new pump to-day, the old impeller was almost gone, how the hell it was pumpimg any water at all has me beat!! It looked like a throwing star and was about 1.00mm thick! so if you have tried most other things, and you still have cooling problems, even though you use inhibitor, LOOK AT THE PUMP!! It was incredible.
So thanks for all the help
