Default Front Passengers door rubbing on front guard - how to fix?

    Hi all,

I have just noticed that the front passengers door on my 2001 VXII Acclaim is just rubbing, by that I mean only by 1-2mm, on the inside of the front guard.

It is not rubbing enough to make the door stick on opening or closer but it has removed the paint on the leading edge of the door over about a 2 inch length.

I don't know if the door has dropped or similar if it is due to accident damage or something as I have only had the car 24hours.

Does anyone know if I can simply adjust the hinges or something by 1-2mm? If so, how?

Also, how can I seal the area where there is no paint left on the edge of the door so it doesn't rust etc?

    Thanks.

When the door is closed have a look at the gap between the front and rear door then have a look at the drivers side and see if it is the same .If it is the same it might be easier to undo the bolts on the front quarter panel and see if you can move that forward as the hinges are not ajustable other than with a hammer or a special tool .Check to see if the door and front quarter panel are flush , if the door is sitting out further than the panel that could also cause it to rub . Also with the said door open about 6 inches ,grab the bottom corner and lift it to see if there is any play in the hinge . It could also be a broken or lose hinge pin.

Thanks Dayvo, I had a look/comparison between sides yesterday but I will have a closer look again in the daylight tomorrow. Thanks for the idea.

Any thoughts on how to prevent rust / seal the door edge once the problem is sorted?

Some touch up paint and a small paint brush.

Hi guys, I've had another look today and the alignment/gaps all seem to be fine when comparing one side of the car with the other. I do, however, think that the front guard has been removed (or attempted removal) at some point as the screw heads behind where the door hinges have sligthly rounded edges and there is a small amount of marking as if they aren't sitting in the same place they were. I'm not sure if its minor (here's hoping not major!) accident damage or someone attempting to get to the aerial in the past (it's stuffed)...

I checked the hinges as Dayvo suggested and they seem sweet. It is only catching by about 1-2mm and is really annoying but not doing any panel damage other than taking some paint off... even so I want to sort it.

Would I be able to more the guard the 1-2mm requireed without negatively impacting on alignment of panels, gaps, etc?

If you loosen the bolts on the guard you should be able to move it enough to get your clearance.

Cheers TC, I was wondering about that. I would say - looking at door gaps - that the passengers side door has a great gap at the back of it towards the B-pillar than the drivers side. But as stated above, moving the hinges is a bit of an issue...

I am happy to move the guard, but this leads me to my next question. Where is the best place to buy a socket set? Obviously I'm from NZ and I have a shipping container on its way (6-8 weeks away) with my 'good tools' in it so I don't want to spend a fortune on temporary stuff however I refuse to buy crap tools so where in Adelaide is a good place to shop for middle of the road, reasonable price stuff?
