I was told you have to put the car into a diagnostics mode to do the timing on a 5LTR VT otherwise it won't time properly?
Is this right or can i do it just like a old school way by removing the advance hose and away i go, any help would be appreciated.
yeh you gotto put it in diagnostics mode, its not very easy getting to the bolt that holds the dissy tho, most people cut a spanner in half but i managed to find one that was a good length to fit in.

this is just me wanting to learn but how did the timing get out? or are you playing with it for better performance?
Just got the car from bodgy home mechainic and it runs like s*#t so thought i'd check that first as some goose has cut the diagnostic plug off, so looks like we'll be rewiring the plug next to get some codes!!!!!
The car is a bit of a head case but got it mega cheap.
Cheers Pat
hey all, just digging up an old thread here, im doing the same thing at the moment on my ss 5l, and ive done all the stuff right, i.e bridged the connector and run it up to temp. i got it all lined up and was dead on the 10 deg btdc mark while in diag mode. then when i though it was all done and dusted, i removed the wire and rechecked the timing before putting it back together and found that the timing mark is now way off, as in its not even on the timing marks piece. and when i rev it the timing mark wanders all over the place. any ideas on whats wrong would be helpfull. also, im not sure if its related but its throwing up fault code 48 which says its the camshaft sensor i think. cheers
48 is crankshaft reference signal missing. CAS or related wiring problem.
