Default Steering wheel stereo contron buttons on my VT SS

    Hi all,

I'm thinking of putting those factory steering wheels stereo control buttons on my vt ss. Although I have replaced the factory head unit with a jvc DVD player I was wondering if it was possible to do so.

I have been told the following:

    1. I'm gonna need what's called a SWI-PAC to interface with the buttons and the new head unit. This much I'm sure about.

    2. I'm gonna need a new clock spring for the steering column which has the cabling for the buttons.

This is what I'm not sure about. Do I need a new clock spring or will my current clock spring suffice?

Has anyone tried this mod in their SS ?

I've read on here the swi pac will work but apparently there is a delay between the button press, and the stereo completeing the function. The other thing you can use is thecat. if you google it you will find it .

If you take off your airbag you will see the plugs behind it that show which clock spring you have. the clock spring you need has three connectors , one for horn, one for airbag, and last one for the stereo controls.

I have the stereo controls and a aivc 310bt HU in my car but haven't done the swi-pac yet, it is the way I would go. I know this sounds petty, but it really annoys me having the stereo controls on the left hand side of the stereo when we sit on the other side of the car, IE they should make stereos with controls on the right side for cars that are right hand drive. Yes, I am pretty crazy I know.

let us know how the swi-pac goes if you get it all hooked up and working.

ive been really thinking about this too for mine but wouldnt know where to start, my stereo doesnt have any buttons so i was thinking the steering wheel buttons would be so much easier for changing stations and such

I am at the moment working on a mod to my headunits remote control. I have so far connected wires directly to the connections on the remote for volume, mute, and source. I am going to either hook the wires directly up to the steering wheel controls, or if that is too much stuffing around, taking out the buttons connections and putting some new buttons in place. Then I am extending the Infrared LED and placing it in a hidden spot where it will have line of sight to the headunit, maybe in the overhead light.

A pretty simple mod actually but I can't take credit for it, I found a guy who already did a basic version.
