    Default VT Calais steering wheel

Hay guys, my name is jessie

Just turned 18 on Friday and bought myself a VT Calais, all in all im pretty happy with the car, has its little things that need to be fixed up but what more can u expect from a 12 year old car, but one of the things i want to fix is the steering wheel, it has a leather one but it is worn and torn, so a replacement is in order, im a bit of a DIY man, so i plan on piking up the wheel when i can and installing it myself, and i was wandering if anyone had done something similar and if so can provide clear instructions, i would like to know about the audio controls as well, will i be able to keep them on the new wheel??, thx in advance

    Jessie

if you can pick up a calais wheel that has the steering wheel audio controls it should just be a straight swap, surely the wires for these are plugged together and not just full wires running back to the head unit

also welcome to the forum, you should start a my ride thread in the show us your ride section for vt-vx-wh, it tends to get people a bit more invovled when it comes to seeking advice

Before you remove the steering wheel disconnect the battery or you might log an air bag fault thus illuminating the air bag warning light every time you start the car and the only way to reset it is with special equipment. Not only that but there is a risk of deploying the air bag. You will need the radio PIN code after reconnecting the battery.
Any VT/VX steering wheel will fit and the audio controls can be fitted to it.

The steering wheel is very easy to remove.

    You'll Need:
T30 Torx security bit to remove the airbag
5/8 Socket to remove the steering wheel
    Hot Red VX SS - 5.7L Gen3, Pacemaker tri-y's, Dual 2.5", 6 Speed, 3.47 LSD, 18" HSV Clubsport wheels

    Stereo - Alpine 9887, JL 300/2, Audison LRx1.1k, Image Dynamics IDMAX 12", Focal 165VR's + Dynamat

Most likely just needs to be reset but it could be a more serious problem. You need to take it to Holden or someone with a Tech 2 to have it reset and they can also tell you what the problem is if resetting doesn't work. Just a reset shouldn't cost much, depends on where you take it. While the light is on the air bags won't work in the event of an accident so for safety sake get it looked at soon.

You can pick up a wheel on ebay. But although any wheel would fit I would recommend keeping the car original and getting a leather one. The series one had a plain leather, and I think either series 2 VT or latter had leather with sections slightly perforated with dots. I think that wheel looks better.

There are a lot on ebay that are multicoloured, personally I would steer ( whoops pun not intended ) clear of these. Each to there own of course. the problem with buying something like a wheel second hand on ebay will be the condition.

If it is cheaper you could get just the wheel and reuse the airbag and steering controls from you car. However the airbag or even the clock spring could be part of the issue with your airbag system.

I've been driving around for years with my airbag waring light on. Mine is just the srs on the drivers seat, I'm fairly sure. But I'm just too lazy to get it fixed.

I would recommend you get airbag light looked into first because youw ould then know what you need besides just the wheel.

Good luck and let us know the outcome.
