Have a search on here, there's plenty of threads on it. Sounds like a vac leak.

A good place to start is by checking the thin vacuum hose at the rear of the intake manifold, make sure it is connected and in good condition.

i will do, could a split in the hose really caus it not to change vents? i was thinking my climate control panel might be faulty or something

Yes, split in the hose could definitely do that because the vents change by vacuum. As lufkin said, it could also be the solenoid pack but the vacuum hose is often the problem and is the easiest to check.

ok mate, i will check for obvious signs like splits or cracks but if i cant find anything obvious what should i do? i guess start the car and put the heater on and listen for a hissing noise?

just need to clarify what you said. the air is blowing out of the face window or front window, as in the vent at the centre of the dash right? if so it won't be a vacuum leak because the default position is at the windscreen or demister mode. i knew this because i had that problem only recently.

a stuck/dislodged vacuum actuator arm, or clogged vacuum solenoid pack might cause that problem though.

when you change mode at the climate control, does the lcd indicator actually showing the changes? if it doesn't the switch itself might be faulty.

if it does it might be what i said earlier, or an electrical problem (hope not).
