    Default VT overheating....or not....and why?!?!

    Hi All,

Was coming home from work today and all of a sudden my temp gauge starting creeping up, rather quickly mind you, the thermo fans kicked in and the needle went up to just above the 3rd line, usually sits in between half and quarter, then it dropped down to normal within maybe 30seconds or so....

Checked the coolant, seemed fine, did add a bit but nothing to bad....

Any ideas? Spoke to a mate and he said maybe the coolant system needs to be bled properly...or the radiator cap is shit?

I would say you have air in the cooling system and it needs to be bled. You must have a small leak somewhere so the air could get in in the first place.

my vt is doing that too. was the traffic very slow at the time when the temp went up? did you use the air-con?

can you check one thing for me petesmith. when you turn on the air-con, does the thermo fans come on straight away and stays on? because mine doesn't and i'm still working on that

mind you i had the following done, by a mechanic:
    1. new radiator, cap, coolant, thermostat, and fan belt.
    2. services. so with new engine oil.
    3. water pump replaced 1-2 yrs ago.
    4. heater tap replaced 2-3 yrs ago.
    5. pressure tested ofcourse, more than once.
    6. hoses and taps along the way.

so you see, nearly everything to do with cooling has been done. err...except the low speed fan doesn't come on. like i said still working on that.

I know this sounds silly but
Just a thought.. If your low speed fan isn't coming on..Maybe try a low tem thermosat until you find this problem??

Well, went to my mechanic today and he bled the system and then did a pressure test and found a leak in the radiator so im up for a new one!
He quoted $300 fitted, don't know if thats a good price or not. I can get them for about $130 off ebay, then maybe i can find someone to give me a hand fitting it, will see how i go. Probably just gonna keep an eye on the temp gauge and water over the next week and probably get around to doing it later in the week....

@tk55 haven't checked to see if my thermo fans come on and stay on when i turn on the air con, ill check tomorrow and let you know!

fit the rad your self mate, its one of the most simple jobs to do. If your in doubt buy a service manual they have step by step instructions for most things with photos, it will pay for its self in saved labour costs 1st time you use it

$130 is a bargain. i used a mechanic because i'm not game enough to fix the car myself. my mechanic charged me $240 for the radiator! (could be because there was an extra charges added on for sending the old radiator to the radiator place for checking).

on top of that $50 for the coolant and $70 for labour.

@tk55 turned on my air con today and the thermo fans do come on and stay on, handy to cool the car down if its getting hot!

Bought a radiator today on ebay, $99 plus $16.50 postage, 12months warranty! Should be here in 2 days! Fingers crossed that its okay.

Hopefully it is good, ill be up shit creek if its not!! Got some big difference in prices at local places, ranging from $199 up to $300 just for the radiator....rip off!
Im sure all radiators are made the same, one in one factory and another in the factory across the road, just different brands on them, i run a computer business and it works the same way, cheap parts most of the time are just as good as the more expensive well known brands....

Hopefully should get it by Thursday, will be fitting it either Friday or Saturday, will let you know how it goes!!

Not normally the case with cheap car parts im afraid. They tent to fail and leave you stranded at the side of the road.

Okay so im hoping it comes tomorrow, have a few questions for ppl on here, i haven't done a radiator in a while:

Do i need to flush the system, including the engine block? If so, how?

From memory i drain the current radiator by taking off the bottom hose, take off the fans, transmission lines (being careful not to spill the trans fluid i think by holding the lines upwards), top hose then unbolt and take out radiator. Slide in the new one, bolt it on, put on top hose and bottom hose, undo bleeder, fill with 50/50 coolant and water, do up bleeder once coolant is flowing through with no air, and while filling new radiator, do so through something that makes the radiator the highest point and kinking the overflow pipe thingy...

If there is anything i have missed, please let me know. If i do it right, maybe ill take pics and do a "How To"....

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks venomske but found out that the radiator has a leak in it...

Also, does anyone know the amount of coolant the cooling system takes, how many litres? I think it's about 12 total if you drain everything from the block and all, i hope i don't have to do that to just change the radiator!!!

buy a bottle of nulon concentrate coolant, about 500ml bottle $12 poor that in to your rad and top the rest up with water to dilute cheaper than buying premixed coolant for $30-$40 5litres.
you dont have to flush the block etc but it wouldnt hurt whilst its all apart
