it'll only take you 5 mins to do so why not, just undo the drain plug at the bottom of the diff, let it drain, put the plug back in, undo the filler and put oil in til its just under or level with the fill hole

It wouldn't hurt to change the diff oil, you won't really notice any difference but it's worth doing. Drain the oil by undoing the drain plug at the bottom. Put new oil in by removing the plug in the centre of the diff. Some diff oil bottles have like a hose on top making refilling easier. It takes 1.65 litres.
I guess I'm a little late, took a while to look up diff capacity.

Undo the filler plug first. NO point draining it to find you cannot remove the filler. Use a Tomb thumb or similar to pump in the fluid till it runs out, your done.

You will have some left over oil, measure that out and chuck that in first in a sense to flush a lil of the crap out. Man even the diff oil out of the bottle stinks lite sh!t.

Doesn't the diff oil only really needs to be checked and topped up as nessecary in these cars and only replaced at specified intervals only if the car is used for towing?

Towing will accelerate the breakdown of the oil as you'll be seeing higher stresses on the gears, but all oils will eventually break down from a combination of heat, oxidation and frictional loads. The manufacturer may have deemed that the oil will in average use outlast the life expectancy of the car, but it doesn't mean it will perform equally throughout it's life.

I think it just comes down to driving style and personal views, there's probably a good reason to change the diff oil if you thrash the car, tow a heavy caravan or want to keep it forever but take the example of someone who drives their car fairly normally, does not tow and keeps it 5 to 10 years there's probably no need to change it. I did the diff oil in my old VN V6 once in the 9 years I owned it, used it for towing once in a blie moon and the diff had nothing wrong with it when I sold it.

I would tend to agree with you, that the benefits of changing it frequently on a car driven "normally" would be marginal at best. Like many things automotive, there's definitely an element of psychology involved. When I bought my VZ, having not known really the history of the car I wanted to try and "reset" everything as much as possible, so I changed all the fluids, filters etc to try and start with a clean slate so-to-speak. How much benefit this really did the car is hard to say, but it was beneficial in that I felt better knowing everything was new and fresh.

If I were to have owned the car long enough I probably would have done the gear oils every 80,000kms or so, mostly of piece of mind - I have little scientific basis for that figure, again it's probably 80% psychological, and 20% of "it's actually a good idea". The only other thing I'll mention is this - my manual transmission fluid after 70,000kms (and a sample of what it looks like when it's fresh).

What sort of oil is that? It looks like Dexron? I'd imagine a gearbox gets a bit hotter than a diff to so that may be why it has discoulored?
The other fluids I tend to change more often than recommended are the power steering fluid and I would probably get the auto trans done at about 1/2 what Holden recommend.

A "clean slate" is also a good idea when you get a "new" car unless you can verify when the fluids were done. I was lucky in that my car had dealer servicing before I got it and they had records of the fluid changes.

I changed mine for the first time at 200,000. I would do it every 80-100,ooo. Apparently Holden left if out of the maintenance regime my accident, not sure how true this is though.

Looks like sambucca to me lol. Yeah I believe alot of it is psychological but if it helps u sleep at night if you know that your car is currently serviced and you have the money then why not. The thing tha I notice the most is my oil out of my oil and transmission I get a nice smooth feel for a couple of weeks when I change it.
