Hello
I am new to the site, just bought a VX commodore of my parents with 260,000 on the clock , we have had it since 21,000 so i know its been pretty well looked after.
I have been looking hear for the past 2 weeks getting information and learning and decided to create an account to ask some questions.
I have a few questions, one thing is the servicing , i am quite confident in doing it myself and as far as a i know the main things are Oil + Oil Filter, Air Filter, Plugs, Leads if Required, Fuel Filter every 40,000. Other Oils how often?
Other than that is there anything else for the major/minor service? the car has been serviced every 10,000, for the first 100,000 then it was less an less. I obviously want to service it more often and keep it in check my driving style is a bit different to the previous owners.
Also is there any big items that may need replacing , i am aware that something like a 4cyl has a timing belt and need to be replaced every so often , but a 6cyl has a chain , how often does this need to replaced , can i tell if its been done? (stamp in car etc) Is there any of these "big" items in a vx? or is it just servicing?
Also i problem that has been happening for a while is the abs light comes on , is there anywhere i can go to get the codes out of it that wont cost alot?
I am Thinking about picking up Gregory's workshop manual would this be a good idea?
Other than that sorry for the long post, thanks for your time.
Welcome to the site. I can answer your first question, no worries. Yes after your oil, oil filter, the plugs should be done every 20,000k's imo. And leads every 40,000 ish. I do my fuel filter and air filter every 20,000 as well. Auto fluid and strainer every 30,000 to 40,000, depends on your driving style and especially on whether or not you tow anything. I like to change the coolant every 30,000- 40,000 or two years. (Which reminds me, mine must be about due) Check your serpentine belt for missing parts of the ribs, or minor cracks/wear; If you know the car's service history, and it has never been changed, then you may as well put a new one on. As, too with radiator hoses, if they have never been changed, or it has been a long time since.
Diff oil, (there's currently a thread on this forum about that) How long since brake fluid was flushed and changed? Don't think your timing chain will give you grief. There's probably a bit I've forgotten, but the guru's on here will soon fill you in.....Good luck.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
Those Gergory workshop manuals are definitely worth getting. I've got one and it has shown me a lot and saved me a lot of money by doing a lot of the shit for free.
