I just now spoke to a radiator specialist about replacing my radiator, tranny cooler leaking trans oil into the radiator water. He told me all the bits I already knew but then said I should check for electrical current as well as it causes leaks. what???

He means stray current.
I understand electrolysis between disimilar metals ie cast iron and aluminium but I thought that that only affected heads and blocks of aluminium head motors. Also thought that seeing how water is not a good conductor of electricity plus the radiator hoses are rubber or neoprene or silicone, all good insulators, the radiator would be isolated from the rest of the car. Apparently not?
Electrolysis affects aluminium radiators really bad (VT has an aluminium core). You need to be very careful when fitting accessories to a car and that they are earthed properly, otherwise you end up with stray currant in the radiator which destroys them in no time. Also, with aluminium radiators, it's absolutely crucial that you run quality coolant at the specified ratio.
Obviously, quality coolant was not used before I got the car, as for accessories, the car has nothing that was not fitted as original equipment by GMH. I think the previous owner managed to damage the radiator and this has cracked the auto trans cooler in the radiator. One of the thermo fan bolt holes is broken in half and the fan housing is hanging in the breeze on that side. Next to fix on my to do list.
my Vx has oil in the raidator, but no water in the motor, i think i have the same probabmlem, with a crack in the raidator,
just wondering what a new raidator is worth roughly? if anyone happens to know off hand
rednut 80, do you know the difference between the smell of transmissiom fluid and motor oil? If you do it is one way of working out what you have in your radiator. If your trans fluid is not showing signs of burnt clutch, ie brown then the oil in your radiator will have a red orange tint to it. As to what a new radiator is worth. Twin trans cooler models are available on ebay for $130, free delivery in Sydney, $18 in Melbourne or Brisbane. Their warranty is 12 months unconditional or $15 for the same conditions for 2 years. Like buying insurance for your car. Of course, if you have money to burn, you can buy radiators for almost any price. I have seen them at over $500. With a 12 month warranty
yeah, mine has definatly split, i have had a mechanic have a look and he told me the motor is fine its just the raidator, i dont really have time to fit it myself as i work from 6 most morning till about 5 each night,
holden can supply a replacement raidator for around 500 bucks, think ill call red devil or someone similar tomorrow
yeah thats what im worried about, preferably i want a anrad if its available, but as long as i get good quality im not to fussed,
got the raidator replaced today, and hoses, clamps, cap, thermostat,
cost me $515, little more then i really wanted to spend, but considering i didnt book in, and they got it all done within a few hours im happy,
and i got a 2 year warenty
dunno i didn't realy get a chance to check it out, just checked the warenty and its aparently 3 year warenty
the radiator I mentioned earlier would be $175 with 3 year warranty, Fit it yourself in an hour if you know which end of the spanner is called "box". $340 to do other things with. These days most brands of radiators available in Aus are made in Taiwan and China and are generally ok esp with 3 year warranty.
