i need help in locating a ticking noise in my vt2 v6,car starts and idles ok has a very small miss in idle ocassionally.but from start up you can hear a ticking noise, not very loud in engine bay but as you walk to towards drivers door noise becomes louder and seems to be coming from unerd car???? caar is in park and not moving.when driving through a car park you can hear the noise bouncing back from parked cars??? and it does increase in speed but not loudness as engind speed increases??
haven't mentioned it but vehicle has 384000 klm on it,does not blow smaoke on start up or on taking foot off accel.any ideas??
Sounds like you may not have enough engine oil
was my first thought to but checked it and topped up one litre, but the oil is bloody black.
Mate when you work it out, tell me! My car is doing exactly the same and I had the engine rebuilt last year so I don't think it the engine. Also I have changed lifters, exhaust gasket and had the injectors cleaned. My next port of call is checking for a stuck/faulty EGR valve, or a leaking EGR pipe.
Can you hear the ticking sound coming from the inlet manifold if you put your ear near it?

check your exhaust manifolds and cat joints for leaks. small leaks make a definite ticking sound
The more i think about it the less i think it is an engine oil issue. I have had the exact same issue with my VR, replaced oil filter and filled with new oil and it didnt eliminate the problem. Mine really sounds like not enough oil in the pistons though.
Acarmody, forgive me for being dumb but what is an EGR valve?
i'm far from a mechanic and dont know much but a few possibilities may be exhaust leak, injectors, sticky valve..., sounds like an exhaust leak to me
haven't thought about exhaust be will let you know tonight, will jump under it today and look for leaks and give every thing a snug down.thanks again for the ideas.
The EGR valve is a pipe that runs from your exhaust manifolds/extractors, back into the plenum chamber, obviously with a valve in the middle. Under certain conditions the car will allow some exhaust gas back into the engine in order to cool down the combustion process and reduce emissions.
I believe that it only came out on VTs and later, and is on the passenger side manifold and goes to just behind the throttle body.
Oh and your only dumb if you don't ask, otherwise it learning which is smart.

GMH put EGR valves on the HJ/HX holdens and have been using them on all model holdens and commodores since then. I am not sure of the VZ and VEs but every model before them had it. Falcons had them also. on the XC XD XE and XF, it was the butt ugly pipe running over the top at the back of the engine. A beartch to remove.
have the car running and block the tip of your exhaust with a rag and see if the noise gets louder, and the system holds pressure.
Had the same problem it is eather sticky lifters they get carbon build up witch was my problem all i did was got some engine flush let it run in oil forv ten min then changed oil all good now or its just noisy injectors just get a bit of hose put it to your ear and to the injectors to hear if its them
hope this helps
found the ticking noise rear lh injector ticking any ideas on how to stop it?????
Get some reco'd injectors. Ebay has plenty.

hey mate...there's alot of possibilities that it could be..but definatly start with the basics and chekc ur oil and fluid levels...do some diagnostic work..does it only happen when the car is park..does the sound increase with engine RPM...definatly check the flanges and joints of ur exhaust system, these make a sound like tink tink tink...stuffed or dirty lash adjusters may be the cause aswell, injectors can also make a clicking noise when they're abit old and buggered..also just check ur spark plugs and things like that incase there is incorrect ignition timing or pre detonation causing pinging..cheers mate
