Hey guys, first thread ever for me.
Im planning on buying my first car (commodore defiantly)
been saving up for 3 years of my casual job.
Now to the real part, found a nice, well looked up holden commodore 2001 s pack VX
he wants 9600 for it with rwc and its done 200000 (extra feartues he had included)
but before i went ahead and told him to get the rwc, i payed for a RACV test. Which came back positively
with a big green for go (pass)
but they did pick up on 3 minor things though.
Steering rack leaking
Rock cover leaking-New gasket
Rear extension seal leaking-Auto
(apparently there not bad enough for a fail..but could affect rwc)
Sorry for lack of detail, i wrote exactly what the report said.
Now the guy is offering to take off 200 dollars and get the rwc but i have to fix them myself or should i tell him to do and wait that extra to get it?
What should i do? is it cheaper for me to fix those things myself?
Thanks guys, hope you can help.

I'd say that it would want to be a good car for $9600. It seems a bit steep. The little golden book tells me it should be worth somewhere around $7000 in average condition.
A steering rack job might cost you $600
Rocker cover gasket $80
Ext. seal $120.
(Approximate installed prices) Some of this stuff is a bit tricky, may not be possible in your driveway by your average bloke.
$9600 is a lot of money for a VX with that many k's.
you could get a vy with less k's than that and cheaper too.
Considering i just bout a VT Wagon for $3000 (180,000km's plus $1200 RWC), $9600 bit steep!
First things first, i think the price is WAY too high. But anyway:
Roughly $500 to fix.
Rocker cover gaskets are about $30 each. Not too hard to do, just swing the throttle body out of the way and the alternator to make it easier.
Seal is about $80. To do the job you need to drop the tailshaft and use a hammer and chisel/screwdriver to knock the old seal out. Depending on the exhaust, it can be a real pain sometimes.
If there is any oil leaking profusely, or that looks like it will drop onto the road, this is reason to fail a car on a roadworthy.
I'd be getting him to knock $2000 rather than just $200 off the price.

Way too much for that car. Steering rack is $400- $500, Rocker cover gaskets are $120ish, and extension housing seal is around $120- $170. These are all common on commos as well as castor rod bushes and engine mounts.
You can get a fully optioned VX Calais for around $8500 with either a GenIII, L67 or the V6 if you are on restrictions. I would give the S pak a big miss unless he dropped it to $5800 or so
VYII Calais L67
I bought rocker cover gaskets from Holden for about $15~ each.

if ya haven't got the hint yet- its way too expensive.
thxs for the replys guys, iv read through it all. Yea the cars expensive but its got some good stuff done to it
im still thinking about it, im taking all your replys to mind.
Well the RW guy siad they weret big enough to effect a roadworthy so i believe there not big, but need fixing.

very minor things
all v6s leak from the rocker cover gaskets nothing to worry about at all
extention house seal meh another thing they all do
and as for the steering rack well its done ...200 000km expect shit like this too need replacing
also massive rip off. for $9600
That car sounds like a rip off...
$200 off the price???????
just what i do when buying a car
Say the car is $9500
If they realy want to sell there car fast
Say to them I will give you $7500 CASH !!!!....If they say no.....Walk away then most of the time when your walking away they will say "ok Take it"
When a car has a price on it.....NEVER PAY THAT!!!!!
Only if its a bargain or what ever
Do this and you will save thousands $$$$$$$ in a life time!!!!!!
Also car machaics do the same.....!!!!!!
But most of the time they wouldn't care less..But say they want to charge $440...Say You say i got a quote for $400 down the road
...................This only what i do..............
There's aout 20 VX Commodores on ebay, 2001 and thereabouts under $5000 and some of them look and sound very nice. Imagine what you could do to one with the $4500 or more you would be saving. there are even some under $4000

The seller is a dreamer, and if you pay that price, you're ripping yourself off.
$9100 without roadworthy...but with that list of things that will require attention, and more money very soon down the track.
Save your money. There are better, cheaper cars out there.

where ya live?
book price for rack seals is $430
You'll probably spend around 1gran if you get it done thru a Holden Service Centre. Get him to fix everything in the car before sale and get a RWC.
Personally, I wont buy the car for that price. Although it does have a lot of extras - having 200,000kms is just to much to spend $9500. The engine might go on for at least another 100T kms, but how is the trans, starter motor, etc. I'd suggest you save up for a stock VX S pack with just 100-150Tkms or go to a dealer instead where they could at least give you 3mos warranty or 3yr extended warranty. Cheers!
yes carbs is right
even if you love this car, there are way better deals to be had
be patient, wait for a better opportunity, yes I know thats hard
Well guys, i have heard and listen to your replys, thxs a lot. i found another vx for 8800 with 140000 kms! and it was a s pack!. I got a racv test on it...came back with a big NO. even no its low kms, they found water in the oil and the car engine showed that the owners had not looked after it well.
Im sorry if i have dissapointed anyone, but im going for the vx commodore with 200000kms sinc i have haggled the price down a couple notches 9100*.
Well both a mechanic and racv tester said it has been looked after, but they only can do as much since they cant pull the engine apart..
I doubt that you disappointed anyone. I remember what it was like when I was young and had my heart set on something and had to have it straight away, but I learnt by my mistakes and now when I buy something I shop around for ages before buying anything. I hope all goes well for you.

^^ What he said, it's easy to get into the mindset of "must buy" after seeing just one or two cars, especially if it's your first, but you'll do yourself a lot of favours if you shop around and take your time. Remember you're looking at buying a Commodore, it's not like there is a shortage of them or anything - plenty of fish in the sea.
