I have a VT 3.8L V6 and it won't start.
When I turn the key I can hear the crank working, or some part of the engine clicking over, but it wont kick over and start.
I checked the voltage using the trip comp, its saying 9.0V? and Vb is saying its at 5.0V. Isn't the voltage meant to be around 12 or 14?
Going to check to see if the fuel pump is working.
If i turn the key the lights on the dash light up and stay on. But if I turn on my lights or flick on the indicators or anything else all the gauges go crazy and the dash lights flicker.
Im sure its the alternator but its once that was put in only 2 years ago....I want to check the regulator but I have no idea how to take it all apart?
The battery voltage should be around 12V without the motor runnung. It shouldnt drop to below 9V while the starter is cranking. Try starting it and then get out and feel the battery leads to see if they are getting hot. If they get hot you have a dirty connection on that lead. The regulator is in the back of the alternator and is held in by two screws. It has a plug going into it with a couple of wires. You can buy new ones for around $30.00 they have new brushes on them as well. If its not the regulator then it could be the battery or a bad connection on a wire.
