Gday Guys,
Just wondering im wanting to jump start my second beast a 1972 escort and i was wondering if i am able to use my VX series 2 commodore executive with a standard jumper cables??? I know now days for certain cars it can damage the computers is this the case with the VX?
Cheers Tim
somebody with more knowledge maybe able to say whether its safe or not, but i have had my car jumpstarted alot and also jumpstarted other people just using old school jumper leads and car is still going strong
i have always been told through trade school and the like that everytime you do such a thing it shortens the life of anything electrical on the car. plus ive seen alternators blown up and i can remember a case once where i had a VN commodore towed in not starting the day after he jump starting another car, coincidence or not, it was the ECU.
i have never jump started anyone with any of my cars.
I have jumpstarted a few random peoples cars, I always disconnect the positive terminal on my car and then jump start the other persons car, wait a few minutes to get a bit of charge back in, disconnect leads, and then hook my positive back up. That way no matter what happens, my car is safe. I also have surge protected cables, that are rated to about 500amps (Yay K-Mart for $40). Also my battery is a D34 Optima, and it has ran my starter motor for over 4 minutes one time and still had plenty of juice left in it, but any normal battery can easily start 3-4 cars.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Just hook up the earths first and you'll be fine.

i used standard cables from my vy to jumpstart my sisters 05 subaru liberty.everything was fine
You should do the exact opposite. Hook up the earth last, and away from the battery ie. use an engine lifting loop, a clean bolt or something else solid.
Then, once finished, disconnect this earth first. This reduces the risk of the battery exploding when the sparks ignite the hydrogen gas that fumes from the battery during charging.
Jump starting is perfectly safe if you do it properly.
Yep I think you connect negative to an earth point on the engine that has the computer. As for the escortjust usual as there's no puter.
