    Default lifetime of VT coils?

    G'day,

my mechanic told me that I'll need to replace maybe all my coils, depending on which ones are causing the problem with my car. My car just doesn't drive smoothly when going thru the gears, especially on take off and also when I'm sitting on 70km/h or 100km/h. The car willl rock back and forth, not being able to enjoy a smooth drive.

On take off it feels like the car doesn't register the accellerator and so it will just suddenly jump for it or i'll take off like a first time L plater...it can be embarrasing!

How long do coils usually last? apparently mine are still stock and I own a 98 VT.

    Cheers,

    any advice is much apprecated!!

I've heard springs and shocks last a good 100,000kms before recommended replacement, not that most people do, but would be a good idea to do it, for handling, performance, etc etc.

Ummm dude I pretty sure the OP is talking about ignition coils.

OP, there is no real life expectancy with these things, can live for ages or can die with low kilometers. Go to a wrecker and get a working coil/set and test to see if that really is the problem before you fork out for new coils. Also test your currents ones with a multimeter.

    lol no probs 'Verynice'

Ok so i will get them tested. Although does my car have to be turned off for like 12 hours or something in order to get an accurate reading?

I would rather just be able to find out if any need replacing and just replace the ones that do.

Sick of my car not driving smoothly!

    Thanks!!

You can test them straight away, your really only doing a resistance test. The easiest way to find a dodgy coil is to get one that you know works, and replace each one of yours in turn and see if the car goes better, it only takes 30 seconds to change each coil.
