Thinking about buying a VX SS auto gearbox for cheap.
It has a slight problem, apparently 3rd gear is slipping slightly.
Is this a major problem, (ie needs a rebuild urgently) or just a fluid change/service?
Will it last a while?
Main reason is so I can have a gearbox in my car while I get the other one rebuilt.
More than likely a major problem. Fluid changes don't do much once a band or clutch is stuffed.
If a gearbox goes into failsafe due to a problem, it usually selects third gear by default. In your case, if third is slipping, it will have no drive at all.
Thanks for that, would it be worth buying to get it rebuilt? It is VERY Cheap.
if your buying the slipping trans with the intention of rebuilding it.. and it's cheap, they'll replace the bands, and probably the clutch packs anyway.
but if you need it to run about as is.. then forget it, if it's started slipping, it will need rebuilding.
are you just planning to build a tougher box, or is your current trans broken too?
i've had trans problems before.
was originally told it was slipping bands, that dropped 3rd gear. quite common i think, with high kms or heavy use.
1. i had it rebuilt stronger and shift kitted.
then it failed again, but this time was a fluid blockage and it also cooked the 3rd/4th gear clutch packs, (the steels they used were too thin i think) and it stopped working in any gear.
2. so had it rebuilt again, (free) then it started slipping in 3rd again. it had cooked the 3rd + 4th clutch packs again, reason unknown. still worked in 1st + 2nd.
3. so had it rebuilt again.

Yeah, mine is still in my car, all working except has no second gear.
Planning on buying the other one with the slipping 3rd gear to rebuild, then swap over into the car.
I guess it would be cheaper to get it rebuilt if it's already out of a car.
How much am I looking at for a rebuild?
The fluid was burnt, so get it or not?
